I don't see myself ever leaving Arch, but I've always thought gobolinux looked kind of interesting. Or maybe Arch's spiritual predecessor Crux.

FreeBSD + pacman.

Until that happens, I'm staying right here.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I'm pretty sure Arch is my last linux distro. I have yet to try BSD (though I have a fresh FreeBSD install under qemu), I doubt it will take over as my main OS, but it I will probably like it. I haven't tried Gentoo yet either, but I have already developed a distaste for it (possibly misguided).

I have tried MacOSX, and I don't like it due to it's "newb friendliness" and being so idiot proof that power users can't do anything with the system.
I have used Windows... I don't even need to comment.
I haven't tried BeOS (and the derivatives), that may be a next step.

Also, as iphitus has said, LFS may be another thing I will try, but I don't think I'm experienced/knowledgeable enough to do that yet, Arch is helping with that smile

Of course you never know... maybe a new fresh distro will emerge in the coming years with something that Arch doesn't have. For the time being, Arch is perfect smile

I wouldn't mind either.

AFAIK there's a FreeBSD fork within the Gentoo project, though it seems stuck into an ever lasting experimental stage. ArchFBSD on the other hand would merge my favorite general purpose posix kernel and my favorite packaging philosophy and hopefully this wonderful community would leverage this idea.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

Maybe ubuntu feisty, just because I was on ubuntu before Arch, but Im not really sure, I guess I'll wait and see people's opinions on that but as far as I can tell from the beta, I didn't find anything new that would interest me.

I'm stlil pretty newbish interms of linux but arch felt like it gives me more control over it in terms of configurating and learning, so I'd like to stay for a while, but then there's also gentoo which I'd like to go through at least once in the future before I stop switching and trying new ones.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

For all you pacman + FreeBSD folks, there is DragonFly BSD (which forked from Free)  which had pacman ported to it wink

But, since I am already using OpenBSD and Arch Linux as the two OS's for every computer I use, I would just replace Arch with something else, maybe netbsd or crux or gentoo, who knows?

Cheers,

Out of curiosity (and not to be too far off-topic), why the tendency to lean toward FreeBSD versus OpenBSD?  I've only messed with both of them a little, but seem to like the ideology behind OpenBSD much more.

I prefer the implementation and ideology behind OpenBSD more too, but when it comes down to using it, FreeBSD is far more practical. That said, I still prefer the FreeBSD over Linux, however it was the packaging that drove me back to Arch.

OpenBSD is close to useless on my laptop, with no WPA support and weak ACPI support.  It's repository isn't as large as that of FreeBSD either. It's just not as practical for desktop use.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

What I do notice, is that BSD is mentioned a lot as alternative for Linux (read Arch in this topic).

Someone mentioned a combination of FreeBSD and Pacman, an idea I do like very much.

FreeBSD does have less dependencies, and this in combination with the great package manager Pacman would be great I guess.... For me Dragonfly is not an alternative there already, because they are in a heavy development process which is not completed half at the moment.

And I have learned something; I did not even know there was another 'Kernel' project as alternative for the Linux kernel. A nice one to follow I think and may be try it when they are a little further wink

Alternatives I have heart:

- FreeBSD, FreeBSD+Pacman smile, OpenBSD, DragonFly, NetBSD
- Debian, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Slackware, Zenwalk, Crux, GoboLinux, OpenSuse
- MacOSX
- Beos
- LFS
- GnuHurd in combination with...

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

Well... I've already tried some BSD systems (FreeBSD, OpenBSD), some OpenSolaris distros (NexentaOS, Solaris Express), some other "exotics" systems (BeOS 5, ReactOS, Unununium OS, Minix etc.) and dozens of Linux distros... I think the next one will be NixOS: http://nix.cs.uu.nl/nixos/

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I can honestly say that as a no fuss desktop distro i would chose ubuntu. However, that depends on the quality of the current release. I wasn't too impressed with either "dapper" or "edgy", as they didn't improve on much after "breezy", which was my first ubuntu experience. Maybe "feisty" can do better? In either case, if you like to tinker, arch is still the better choice.

I really don't think that haiku would fit the description of a "distro", but this is still my dream scenario. It has a _long_ way to go to be as featureful as pretty much any linux desktop system though. There are things i would have a hard time living without, like wine for example...

Last, but definately not least, i would like to have an AmigaOS (or clone) system on modern hardware. This isn't very likely to happen, since both OS4, MorpOS and AROS are making too little headway these days. That is a real shame. Computing has never been as fun, and  I doubt that for me, it'll never be.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I have to admit, that I am installing Foresight Linux on my laptop right now, although I just wanted to perform a new Arch installation with Gnome. Foresight Linux made me curious, because they had Gnome 2.18.1 only one day after the release. If you are into Gnome, Foresight may be worth a look. The Conary software management system claims to be superior compared to any other package manangement, and ppl already using Foresight told me, that cooking Conary packages is even simpler than writing a pkgbuild. It's indeed pretty impressive, and although Foresight is considered to be bleeding egde (even comes with Compiz installed by default), the concept behind it takes care to be more stable than any other distro (like the groups feature in conary, in which individual packages can stay at a certain version until the maintainer decides to push the whole group, like Gnome, to the next level, preventing breakage due to a new version of an individual package). Another interesting aspect is, that individual repos can be hosted centralized at rPath Online, and it is easy to create a new online repo for your own packages. That all sounds great, that's why I decided to give it a try (will see, how long I can do without Arch).

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I have NO idea, but it I will keep on trying out these easy-to-go distributions just like Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSE, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva and Zenwalk.

Just to see in how far they improved. But I will stick to Arch for my everyday work. It's the best solution to both have a stable system and bleeding-edge software.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I think I am going to give one of the BSD's a try, anyone with a suggestion for a first time BSDer? Other than that I plan to keep current on ubuntu so that I can provide my mom and sister with help on their computer when problems arise. Opensuse is another one I am going to check out again. But for the everyday OS my choice will be arch for the foresable future, man I love this distrubution. Oh yeah, I have foresight installed as well and I must say it so far has be a disappointment for me. Conary crashes constantly, making an upgrade of the system unbearably long. Once rpath gets those problems with conary straightened out foresight linux will be one of the best distros out there, but right now I wouldn't recommend it anyone unless they wanted to file bug reports all day.

FreeBSD.  I've found it's the easiest to work with and the docs are fantastic.  Make sure you try-out portupgrade for package/port management.

Thanks, I was leaning towards FreeBSD I've heard mostly good things about it, and the fact that it has great documentation is one of the best. I will do some more research into the other flavors as well but right now it's looking like FreeBSD.

1. I'm staying with Arch. I now think that it will be my last distro.
2. Do anybody know if the dismal state of audio production in FreeBSD (no real time, no memory locking, Rosegarden is nonexistent, Ardour is MIA and JACK is nonfunctional) has changed? I'm staying with Linux because I love music, and I love to record my songs using Software Libre.
