Well the composite extension is working great, but still no composite effects on metacity... xcompmgr works fine and composite_manager is enabled.

You have compile and install libcm (from gnome svn), recompile metacity with --enable-compositor and enable the gconf-key. I have tried it a few months ago, but it didn't work for me, all metacity did was giving me blue colored windows (tried with nvidia and i810).
