Though I see Thunderbird in the package list on the Arch web site, 'pacman -Ss thunderbird' yields no package other than the language package for Thunderbird, even when I try with different mirrors.

Thunderbird is in community repo, so:
edit /etc/pacman.conf and uncoment line Include = /etc/pacman.d/community
edit...
Oops, looks like it is in current repo not community

Are you sure? It seems to be in current to me:
[ramses@icarus ~]$ pacman -Ss thunderbird
current/thunderbird 1.5.0.10-1
Standalone Mail/News reader
extra/thunderbird-i18n 1.5.0.10-1
Language packs for Thunderbird
community/thunderbird-spell-it 1.5.0.9-2
Italian spellchecker files for Thunderbird
community/thunderbird-spell-pl 1.5.0.10-1
Polish spellchecker files for Mozilla Thunderbird

I ended up going to the Arch ftp site and downloading pacman sources and finding the repo files in there, and copying them over to my /etc/pacman.d folder. That solved it. I must have had a problem in my repo files.
