Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

Please post more information. For example the output of lspci and lsmod is usefull. You should also have a look at dmesg when loading you sound modules by hand.

Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

Perhaps you are running KDE...check into it in control center audio setup and delete the hardware provided therein and re-initiate alsa selection...apply.

Works for me.......

Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

just to make sure the problem IS your alsa upgrade, downgrade to the previous (it should be fund in /var/cache/pacman/pkg) and if sound returns then you have confirmed is the upgrade.
If that is the case I would remove alsa and then re-install the latest version anew, since obviously something did not get updated.

Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

OK. So we know that is not alsa.
When you run alsamixer are there any muted controls?
Do you get your card recognized when you run alsaconf?
What kind of sound card do you have? I noticed that your lsmod seems to make reference to a usb sound card... is that the case?

Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

ok this is what ive done...since kernel beyond is not updated i used this one...and the sound WORKS like a charme!!!!! the problm could only be from the alsa patch that is on the kernel...is it really necessary that patch??

Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

OK. Then to troubleshoot the problem, start at the most basic level.
1. Go to your BIOS and make sure the embedded sound card has not been disabled for some weird reason. If it did set it back on again.
2. I can see that you have:  "snd_hda_codec         205184  1 snd_hda_intel" so that's good
3. make sure nothing is disconnected from your system and volumes are at least at 50% on the speakers
4. issue the command "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" Notice any errors that may show up in the console, if you do get them, and post them.
5. When you run alsaconf **is your card found**? This is important and you did not answer that question before but we need as much info as we can get since it is hard to troubleshoot over the Internet.

Give it a try and post.

OK then. If that is the situation then it answers most of the questions. The problem seems to be related to the update, so keep the version you are now using that works. You do not HAVE to update.
It would be interesting to know what the problem is because it may help the devs in case there is a bug that affects some systems, but if it works that's all you care for now.

Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

sickhate, I've had some similar problems (only managed to get sound working after boot by running alsaconf) after the alsa upgrade. I'm running KDE, so just now I started kmix and noticed that PCM was switched off. Switching it on and now it works, also directly after boot. Anyway, just a thought...

bebo thanks for the help.. but im still with no sound..i dont understand ive tryed everything..im using gnome...tryed gnome-alsamixer..one thing ive notice theres missing some config  things from alsamixer...there are only 6 channels and no side speaker...but only on the lastest kernel...since i earesed the 6..that was working perfectly  this one is the cause that stop the sound....i hope that any developer see this...

Re: alsa upgrade-no sound

Hi,
not sure if it helps but I remember that I had similar problem a few times.
Try to force the module load order.
in my rc.conf modules are loaded in following order:
MODULES=(rtc aes-i586 twofish agpgart intel-agp drm dm-crypt e1000 ipw3945 snd-hda-intel fuse)

Thinkpad x60s with inte sound.

If you get sound working use rc.local to load alsa settings after reboot, mine got lost after every reboot.
Just add:
alsactl restore

Worth a try..

Regards,
xor
