No wireless

Hello, I've been using Archlinux for at least a year and Im very happy with it.
A few months ago I bought a HP dv6045nr laptop and I installed Arch, I installed the integrated webcam, microphone, etc. Including the wireless card and I successfully used it with NetworkManager for a few weeks, but last weekend I suspended the computer and leaved for a few hours, I came back to my house to see that the wireless led was red, I thought it was because I suspended it for a long time, however, I restarted the computer and nothing happends, the computer just missed the wireless card, it wont detect it anymore and I dont know why, I suspended the computer a few times before that and the wireless kept doing great, after some reboots suddenly the wireless was detected again and I used it for a few hours after the system crashed and I had to reboot, after that I couldnt get the wireless card to work anymore.
Any suggestion? I use just the current, extra and community repo, I use the ndiswrapper module which is loaded everytime the system boots. Im using 2.6.20.3-3 kernel because of the NVIDIA Chip kernel bug.
I have wlan0 added to interfaces like the wiki says :
wlan0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo !eth0 !wlan0)
eth0 works great, so I really dont have any idea of what changed my system.

Re: No wireless

Have you tried running "iwconfig" form a term window and seeing what the system thinks your wireless card is?  on my HP DV8000 the wireless is not wlan0 it's eth2.  Here is the pertinent part of my rc.conf:

lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
eth2="dhcp"
wlan_eth2="eth2 essid MyEssid"
WLAN_INTERFACES=(eth2)
INTERFACES=(lo eth0 eth2)

Re: No wireless

Yeah, my i already tried, my interface was wlan0, when I try iwconfig it just shows me lo, eth0 and eth1, none of them are wireless
However I suspended some hours ago and wireless is back, I hope this is forever

Re: No wireless

It's best to deactivate your network (especially the wireless) alltogether before you suspend your box, I found out. So deactivate the existing leases, shut down the network, unload the related modules. Do the reverse procedure when you wake up the box.

It's all perfectly doable within the standard suspend scripts.

P.S. 'Forever' is a bit overoptimistic... Unless you keep your box in the state it is now *forever* you might break it more sooner than later roll

Re: No wireless

Thanks B, I'll try that later and will see the results, Im sure that if it works then I manage to get a faster way to do that, I like fast things smile

Re: No wireless

I tried to turn down all the modules and services whlenever I power off the computer, also when Im suspendig it, III tried to turn off the switch after doing that, before and all kind of nonsense stuff. The wireless do whatever it wants whenever it wants, it can start from the first boot or being 2 whole days without it ( like right now ).
I dont know what to do, lately on the iwconfig the eth1 interface shows as a wireless interface with the bmc43xx driver, however I dont use that one, it isnt even installed, I dont know where it came from.
Any help?

Re: No wireless

Well, maybe that should have told you something? roll

[root@pelle1 /]# modprobe -l bc*
/lib/modules/2.6.20-ARCH/kernel/drivers/bluetooth/bcm203x.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.20-ARCH/kernel/drivers/media/dvb/frontends/bcm3510.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.20-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/bcm43xx/bcm43xx.ko

So i guess the bcm43xx.ko is either moved to vanilla kernel nowadays, _or_ your blacklist have been altered.

What do you mean when you say 'nonsense stuff'? There is no such thing as nonsense on Linux... Either a program gives you info, warnings, or errors. But no nonsense.

As for suspending: if you suspend to disk, you shouldn't have to turn off your device, it should turn itself off, if you suspend to ram, you should not need to turn off your device either, since it goes into some kind of sleep mode.

Re: No wireless

Its nonsense because dmesg, lspci, lsusb, errors, logs and all stuff Ive seen is exactly the same when wireless is working and when its not, there is anything different between these two scenarios, I boot Arch and wireless works, I turn off, boot again and wireless is not working, without changing any config file, doing an upgrade, it just works ramdomly

Re: No wireless

You still haven't told us if you've gotten any further? Have you blacklisted bcm43xx module? If you run "ndiswrapper -l" does it say "hardware present". You haven't told us what method you use to suspend your computer. Is ndiswrapper configured to "unload" when suspending your computer?
It's kind of hard to help you if you don't provide any input...

Re: No wireless

[root@AnA angeltc]# ndiswrapper -l
bcmwl5 : driver installed
        device (14E4:4311) present (alternate driver: bcm43xx)
bcm43xx is blacklisted.
And I have no idea how to configure ndiswrapper to unload when suspendig.
I suspend to ram.
However I think it doesnt matter the suspend thing, cause this happends anytime, I havent suspended in some time and is still not working.

Re: No wireless

Did you check the ndiswrapper for the recommended windows driver?

Re: No wireless

I was using ndiswrapper, I ve never used bcm43xx driver, I downloaded the driver form the HP website and I was happy with it, since the 2.6.20 kernel it ran flawlessly. So I dont really know what happened.
EDIT:
I went back to Windows, after some months of Arch on my laptop I think that it is not ready for it, maybe in some more time Ill try again and check out if wireless and kernel problems are fixed so I can use it again. However Im using it on my old desktop computer, it runs with no problems.
