gtkpod permission

I have an ipod nano, which works just fine, and works fine under Windows also.  With gtkpod, I can read fine, and "copy tracks to filesystem" okay, but when I try to sync the ipod after add/removing the songs, it freaks out with a "permission denied' error.  I 777'd the permissions, but it still didn't work.  I can manipulate the files just fine via terminal, so it is not a hardware problem I don't think.  Any ideas?  I'd really like to get it to work, I am kinda tired of The Libertines right now. wink
