(resolved)Can't print

Installed my printer two days ago and can't get it to print. Been a while since I installed a printer and this is the first under ARCH. Cups is running and my printer is detected. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone needs more info just let me know. THANKS!!!

Does anyone know what "stopped with status 22!" means?

Filter "foomatic-rip" for printer "HP_Deskjet_D4100_series_USB_1" not available: No such file or directory

Try to search in this direction. Maybe you should reinstall foomatic-rip?

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Thanks George_K I have foomatic installed but it gives me the error "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed". foomatic-rip is in /usr/lib/cups/filter with a symbolic link to /usr/bin. So as it is a perl shell script is it failing because it is owned by root? I am just about @ my wits end with this printer!!!

Also now when I try to print a test page it says "Quota limit reached". This is ridiculous, know one should ever have this much trouble installing a printer on ANY os!

I have been through the CUPS wiki front and back and I just can't figure it out. Any help would be great before I do something stupid... like hook it up to a WINDBLOZE box!

Re: (resolved)Can't print

As you are dealing with an HP printer I wonder whether you have installed hplip and added it to the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf (before cups)?

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Thanks gradgrind, I do not have hplip installed. It is the driver for the printer correct? Does it go in Daemons line or the module line?

Make sure you clean out your /var/spool/cups too (don't remove any dirs in it, just make sure there are no _files_ in it anymore).

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Some people have all the luck, don't they?

I've never seen these wonderfully informative error messages, but maybe you could tell us how you tried to print the file? Have you tried kprinter? It works great for me.

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Thanks again gradgrind, I just made up a file to see if it would print. Made a file, clicked on File-print and these messages popped up. I am using XFCE if that matters. Will do some more investigating today.
THANKS!
I can print  a test page from the CUPS web interface and I can print a web page, just cant print a file.

Cannot get hp-toolbox to run either, what a mess

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Have you got pyqt installed? hp-toolbox needs it.
I think there's a print utiliy for xfce (xfprint?), but I have never tried it. You could also try gtklp.

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Yes I have pyqt installed. Also have xfprint installed. For some reason it won't let me print from a file. i can print from a web page and a test page in the cups web interface.

Tried printing from gtklp and in the cups web interface under jobs it says: processing but under printers it says: printer not connected; will try again in 30 seconds. The printer is connected, this is just to weird.

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Why under administration tab on the cups web interface does it show another printer to be installed, I only have one printer and I have installed.

Does any one know how to edit xfprint, that is where I am getting my error message from when trying to print a text file. Tried un-installing and re-installing but no help.

Re: (resolved)Can't print

I have just installed a printer using hplip/cups on a fresh Arch install. It took about two minutes and it was then possible to print a text file using lpr, so I guess you are being really unlucky. Here are some points that may (or may not) be helpful:

When selecting the device in the cups printer configuration make sure you choose the line containing HPLIP

Choose the model from the list (I see in my list that there is a D4100 ... foomatic/hpijs, which from your post above seems to be your model)

After you have added the printer, the cups description for it should have a line starting:
Device URI: hp:/usb/ ...

Make this printer the default (button in cups printer configuration).

Maybe you could try deleting your configured printer(s) and configuring it afresh?

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Thanks again for you're help Gradgrind!

I think deleting and re-installing via the cups web interface is part of my problem: under the admin tab on the web interface it is asking me if I want to install the very printer I have installed and in xfprint next to print to it shows "HP_DESKJET_D4100_series_USB_1 HP DESKJET D4100 series". When I try to print using xfprint I am still getting the error messages I mentioned earlier. I guess I need to find where these two are reading from and see if there is a double entry or something.

If anyone has any ideas I am open.

THANKS!!!

P.S. My URI is as you say for the printer

usb://HP/Deskjet%20D4100%20series?serial=TH6CND13CC04D6

I get the exact same message as you with hp-toolbox, I'm going to compile it from source and see if it's the arch package or upstream.

What message are you getting? I haven't gotten hp-toolbox to run yet:

I'm pretty sure this is wrong - you are not using the hplip interface. The URI must start with 'hp:' and you get this by selecting the line containing 'HPLIP' when choosing the device in the cups web configuration. Be careful, there are several devices offered and only the one with HPLIP will work properly!

Re: (resolved)Can't print

This URI looks better:

Device URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_D4100_series?serial=TH6CND13CC04D6

Still getting client error in XFPRINT when I try to print a text file.
And I still have an entry under the admin tab in cups web interface for a printer to install, doesn't make sense.

Yes, that looks good. Have you set that printer as your default?

What about printing with other programs (lpr, openoffice, text editors, gimp, ...?)

Do you mean the 'New Printers Found:' section? I wonder how useful that is - it tells me I have CANON (Parallel Port #1) and EPSON (Parallel Port #1) printers, which I most certainly haven't!

Yes it is default and I can print from anywhere except a text file which uses xfprint.

Re: (resolved)Can't print

Well, out of curiosity I just installed xfce4 and tested xfprint4 on a text file. I'm sort of sorry to say it printed fine, not a trace of an error message. I suppose you set the back-end to cups (xfce4-menu/settings/Printing System Settings)? I tried with the wrong setting there but didn't get the same error messages as you report above, so I guess it's not that.
