I'm trying to install XGL from the community repos, but when I go
pacman -Sy xgl
I get these errors
checking for file conflicts...
error: the following file conflicts were found:
libgl-dri: /usr/lib/libGL.so: exists in filesystem
libgl-dri: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1: exists in filesystem
libgl-dri: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so: exists in filesystem
mesa: /usr/include/GL/gl.h: exists in filesystem
mesa: /usr/include/GL/glext.h: exists in filesystem
mesa: /usr/include/GL/glx.h: exists in filesystem
mesa: /usr/include/GL/glxext.h: exists in filesystem
I'm pretty sure that these files are placed there by the Nvidia drivers...

Why do you want xgl if you have an nvidia driver?

good question I'm just following the wiki, it says that XGL accelerates video in X and stuff. So I presumed that you need it for hardware acceleration. If you don't then it looks like I don't need it!

I am just saying xorg comes with aiglx which works well with nvidia about the only people still using xgl (in my opinion) are propietary users of ati, but the open guys are using aiglx too (mostly).
I could be wrong here as it is mostly your own opinion. The other thing is I think (big I think as I haven't studied nvidia) the nvidia driver can even handle with out xgl or aiglx...

yeah you can run beryl without XGL/AIGLX but how do programs in linux hook into the vid cards functions? Lets say that a program makes an API call which XGL handles, would you presume that Nvidia's proprietary drivers would respond to the same API call?
My knowledge of programming is very limited which is why I initially wantd to install XGL, I've given up on that idea and just presumed that XGL = nvidia drivers and that they will both function the same on the same level.

I can tell you from experience that Beryl with XGL is significantly smoother than Beryl on nVidia alone. (The cube movement is noticeably more fluid and 'connected' to the mouse)
Beryl with XGL is the best choice, if possible.
If you can get it working, it's worth it.

Yup, Beryl+XGL. And as I recall, I couldn't get window borders and such WITHOUT installing XGL when Beryl was "turned on".

Wow, I guess I am alone here ati though.. XGL=OK, AIGLX=Really Nice. I have never tried the without either since I have ati.

Huh... maybe I'll try out XGL on my Nvidia card then. I'd been using AIGLX with Beryl on a 6200 and it ran okay, although not much better than on my Intel 915.
And to OP, since you seem a little confused:
You don't need XGL or AIGLX for hardware acceleration. You just need to use the proper driver. XGL and AIGLX are needed only for the Compiz and Beryl hardware accelerated window managers, and will in fact decrease your performance in other 3d apps. Apologies if you knew what you're doing and I just misread.

I already installed nvidia drivers for 3d acceleration in other apps.
I also want XGL for beryl. unfortunately it won't install using pacman -S cause it conflicts with nvidia drivers. I am also having the same problem with VLC, I can't install vlc because it complains that glx/mesa already exists.

what do people think of this strategy, remove my nvidia drivers, install the packages which seem to be conflicting and then reinstall the nvidia drivers?
