Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello every Arch Linux users,

I only started using it for trying out flatpak apps, it is also because i am going to use linux for the first time (I also used Kail Linux but this is off-topic)

Because of this, i installed your Arch Linux on a VM (VirtualBox) and tried installing it (without archinstall) and it worked (No secure boot or TPM support btw)

Btw the Host OS was Windows 10

This message is made thru the Host OS

Might aswell later try installing Arch Linux on bare metal

As far as so, I am enjoying Arch Linux, now before i installed Arch Linux, i installed Ubuntu but it is not my taste or my tastebuds, so I installed Arch Linux instead and its great!

It is because Arch Linux is lighter and thus, unlike Ubuntu, it can save a older laptop's life

This is why i am here, I do not plan to stop using this Distro for nothing, so might as well create a Arch Linux Forum Account

If i do need help or i am just chatting then i am online in this forum

That's the end of the message.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, I'm Zachary Marwellus. Not really. I pulled this name out of my butt while writing some retro cyberpunk scifi short story about a hacker with this name in a dystopian apocalyptic world (of course) where a big fat super AI forces him to escape his own miserable universe through a interdimensional portal to end up in a (kinda) utopian world which resembles very much the scifi of the "golden era" (Asimov, Heinlein, Clark etc.). it's a fun story, where ideologies, fashion and music tastes collide frontally and bio-electronics meet positronic robot brains to blow everything up in consequence. No, it's actually a badly written nerdy mess only guys like me might get - on strong designer drugs. And not yet finished. And written in German because it's convinient, at least for me.

Besides I'm a web fullstack dev, at least I believe I'm one, it pays my bills. Next year I'll become half a century old :'-( and the world of today seems to become just the one my parents warned me about, great.

I use Arch Linux (w/ desktop env) now because I liked it from the very first moment and it seems to like me too - for now. Before I only used Linux on desktop for a while, falling back to Win again and again, because I'm a lazy, disloyal sucker. But ... this time it might be different, even a*holes like me get it when it's about time, heh.

So much about it, have fun, keep rockin' smile

I actually like sauerkraut.

Congratuliation to your english, I'd like to know Russian the same level.
Well, AL, archlinux, seems to be a very interesting decision, but someway a
bit hard because everything is quite strict. But that way one won't learn nonsence. I'm at Raspian, the subsection of ALARM, archlinuxarm and trying to study boot-stub. The trick is one has absolutly everything on the tiny card to boot and bootmenue.
As I started from Windows3.5 I came over DOS to SuSE-linux and Debian, but this was too huge. So I got Odroid with armbian but it died silently. So i traine ALARM now:)
All the best for you from Vienna!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone!

I've been using different distros on and off for a while and felt like it's been a long time coming for me to switch to Arch. I want to make the journey from casual consumer to someone who actually understands how Linux works and be able to custom-tool an operating system that fits my needs exactly.

I've been breaking and fixing my own computers since my parents made the mistake of letting a child touch a Dell Windows 95 machine. I don't have much in the way of schooling or professional experience, and I'm absolutely terrible at math, but the hobbyist side and customization is something I've always been interested in - the most interesting think I've tinkered with is getting Debian to run on an old Powerbook G4.

I hope I can learn from all of your experiences!

Hello,

I'm Renato Trevisan, 40; from São Paulo, Brazil. I'm a professional translator and I've been interested in Linux since the late 2000s with the Ubuntu cds. Recently I've got 100% into Linux, tried all distros possible but settled now for a clean and pure Arch install.

I hope we can become friends and help each other.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey Everyone,

I'm on this epic quest to further myself in anything programming, cybersecurity, and privacy oriented. I have always wanted to invest my time into learning the way of the arch but didn't have the motivation until this week. AND IM SO GLAD I DID! It's playing up to be the best choice I have made, and I feel better off for it.

Looking forward to interacting with you all, and to hopefully end up giving help more than I'd need it XD.

Cheers,

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hihihihi!

I'm GoldApricot (Gold is fine), they/them please!

I started using linux as my daily driver about 2 years ago. Had a period before that where I had to daily drive the pinephone around 2019 with no linux knowledge whatsoever and very scarce computer skills at all at that time. That was,,, fun. To say the least.

Got started out of necessity on linux mint when the only computer we had access to was a garbage 2016 dell laptop that was outdated at the time of release.

Mint was nice, but I got tired of cinnamon. Plus, when I finally got my own tank of a PC built I needed a faster update cycle for some key drivers (love my 7900XT).

Did OpenSUSE for a year. Big fan of it, sane defaults, like YaST's GUI suite for when I couldn't be bothered to remember terminal commands. Ended up hitting a ceiling really bad. I just learned computers proper 3 or so years ago, and it turns out I'm a big tinkerer! The documentation for the distro just isn't *quite* what I needed from it, and its Open Build Service just didn't have the programs I used as often as I would have liked.

Did some research on Arch. Was happy to see that I had some wrong impressions about the quality of it's main repository. Had an online buddy sing praises for a while as well. I was *very* interested when I heard that the Arch team was working directly with Valve. That last one in particular had me pretty much sold.

Finally ran into a bug on VRChat that I couldn't find *any* info on, and decided that the Arch documentation was a goldmine that I was a fool not to tour. Installed Arch a couple weeks ago (archinstall was a big help - I like having some defaults?), and I've been in love with the distro ever since!

I seriously cannot believe the quality of the ArchWiki. I've definitely had to do some more manual setup than I have with any other distro, but getting all the core components up and running has been a breeze. I knew it was good, but I didn't expect it to make take away so much frustration.

Really looking forward to getting involved with the community over here. Y'all have seriously been a game-changer. ?

Hello, my name is Rishi and I am excited to build and customize my own OS. Been a windows user my whole life and now that I don't have to use it anymore I was looking for a good Linux Distro to use, I came upon Arch and I was sold. I am writing this post so that I can come back years later and see how far I have come, to see if I did all the things I set out to do. If you are reading this, Have a Nice Day.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,
After 8 years of Linux Mint, finally switched to Arch (Manjaro KDE actually, but still...). Hope someday I'd actually "BTW use arch". I did stumble with openSUSE for a couple days, but the speeds of mirrors sucked. Don't know why! So, I just switched to the next rolling release in my list.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello ! Since I posted elsewhere, I figured I might post here. I switched to Arch from Mint last year.

As you may see I made my account here around the same time, so you might wonder why I'm only posting now... I made an last year time to post about an issue. But while I was writing my post and trying to think of every bit information I could be asked, I ended up thinking of something I hadn't tried yet and it did it and it worked; and so I erased the unposted topic. Same thing might've happened again another time. But today it wasn't the case so I ended up posting for real.
There are several reasons why I switched: I wanted to learn more about have the system worked, try tiling wms without having to negotiate with the pre-installed desktop or risk deleting a depency of something I used, and also I had a few bugs on Steam and figured Arch would be better since it's what SteamOS is based on.

Before Arch I also tried Debian on a laptop, and I still use it as well but having a rolling release on my desktop seemed better.

I use i3 btw

Hello other Archers,
I am new to Arch, and just recently installed CachyOS / KDE Plasma about 2 weeks ago. I did use Ubuntu 24.10 / Gnome, but was curious about Arch Linux and hear good things about it.
I am very grateful there is Arch Wiki and Forums to get support if I need, thank you.
I created this name back around 1990 on my Amiga; original wanted Cyberknight but made it shorter to cybernite and also seem to use the computer during the night mostly.

Welcome cybernite.  Nowadays I just use my actual name, some of it anyways but my old handle is just as old.  "LutherTJustice" or just "Luther".  That goes back to the old blue board bulletin boards and a little later the ahem.. IBM compatible bulletin boards.  You kinda had to be from my old neighborhood for my handle to make sense.

First time posting this message, I'm using archlinux for 6 months now, first started with gnome desktop environment, Then gradually install my hyprland setup. Then after 3 months, completely removed my gnome DE and using `hyprland + SDDM` as my desktop as of now. Not looked at any distro after installing archlinux.

The ArchLinux wiki is so good I knew I would eventually try this distro. It will be my daily driver for 3D graphics using Blender, 2D graphics in Inkscape and Krita. It has been a good experience so far and I am enjoying the rolling releases.

The Arch wiki brought me here, too! That and the way Arch users were usually the ones answering questions well in other places.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello!
I've been using arch and arch based distros for the past 6 months because of the rolling release model and because of arch wiki. My first distribution was mint for 3 months until l, after the persuasion of many linux youtubers, moved to arch. I only really use Linux for messing around and also to learn more about the command line.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Just installed Arch a couple weeks ago!

It's been a baptism by fire--I've spent a little time using Manjaro and Linux Mint, but this is my first go at daily driving Linux.

I'm liking Arch so far. It reminds me of moving out of my parents house for the first time; that is to say, you start with next to nothing. Before leaving home, I didn't comprehend the volume of little, random objects I needed to function each day (I have to go and *buy* an oven mitt--it's not already there!). Using Arch for the first time is a hilariously similar experience. My system isn't completely where I want it, but it's been so rewarding to go from a base installation to being able to watch movies and browse the internet.

Hello! After a good amount of research, I decided on Arch to serve as my first distro for learning linux! I've already learned quite a bit and the wiki and these forums have been super helpful for helping me solve some problems. I'm excited to continue learning and I hope I can one day be the individual answering questions on here!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone, I'm Novaera from Catalonia.

I've been searching for my perfect Linux distro for over two years but always avoided Arch due to its seemingly long and complex installation process. Instead, I settled on the next best thing: Manjaro. However, after encountering some bugs I couldn’t resolve, I discovered archinstall and decided to give it a try. I was amazed at how easy it was to get Arch with KDE up and running!

I absolutely love this OS. I love that it comes barebones, giving you the freedom to choose exactly what you want and tailor it to your needs. My setup includes an AMD 7800X3D CPU, a 7900XTX GPU, and 64GB of DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 RAM. I mainly use my system for gaming with Steam and Proton GE + Watching Youtube, surf the web with Firefox and some work releated stuff with Dropbox + spreadsheets. To my surprise, I get better FPS and a much smoother experience compared to Windows (not to mention the lack of bloatware, spyware, and other annoyances).

I really enjoy being on the bleeding edge, and almost every issue I've encountered so far has been easy to solve by consulting the Arch Wiki. I feel right at home here and plan to stick with Arch for a long time.

My laptop is now also running Arch with KDE, though my work computer is still on Manjaro for now (mainly because VirtualBox is a hassle when upgrading kernels, so I’m holding off for the moment).

Looking forward to seeing you around the forums!
