KDE - can't change wallpaper

Hi all -
seem to be having lots of silly little problems setting up my new laptop
I use the KDE 'configure desktop' menu to select a new wallpaper. I can get a preview, and have checked that the images are ok with qiv, but the image does not display on desktop. I tried this with all my images but can't change from the default KDE wallpaper!
I guess it could be some badly configured .conf file somewhere, but this is a brand new up to date install of arch...
any ideas? thanks a lot

Have a look in "~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc", and see what "Wallpaper" is set to in it's various locations.
