New intel driver

Hello everybody,

as of now, xf86-video-intel will replace xf86-video-i810. Everybody using testing will have to modify their xorg.conf files to use Driver "intel" instead of the previous Driver "i810". Like always, report your issues on our bugtracker.

Good luck!

Re: New intel driver

Just installed it - works on my machine with Intel 940 GML graphics controller, dri works too.
A notice during upgrade that the name of the driver has changed would be good.

Re: New intel driver

Any idea on how to manually set DPI seems to default to 98x98?

Re: New intel driver

works fine here with i855GM. @shen: the dpi settings are automatically computed; no need to change them.

Re: New intel driver

@shen
if you use startx to ahem start X you can set server arguments

vim `which startx`

just add -dpi 98 to defaultserverargs and you're done, if you use {g,k}dm you need to check for an option in their respective configuration file

Re: New intel driver

Yea it will set it utomatically but it defaults to 98 DPI and I hate that size.. I prefer 84 DPI but at this point haven't figured out a way to alter that manually. Auto is fine but you should be able to manually adjust it to fit individual needs..:) Thanks for the heads up though..:)

Tried the startx -- -dpi 84 to manually adjust but it is ignored and defaults to 98 dpi..Just to large of a screen size for my liking.

Re: New intel driver

I just installed it on my laptop, but gnome won't start. First it didn't even started X, because i had VideoRAM in my xorg.conf. I removed that line and GDM started. But now if i try to login, i only see a black screen with couple of veritical stripes. I tries to start gnome but falls back to GDM. Somebody got the same problem? I got a 915GM, maybe it has something to do with framebuffer and 1280x800?

Re: New intel driver

Alas, won't work here either.

As soon as slim tries to start I get that psychedelic xcrash bluescreen.

Info: i830 on laptop, uses shared system memory for graphics. No xorg autoconfigs have worked for me in past, had to use the ubuntu autoconfig to get higher resolutions and to X when i first installed arch.

Removing the videoram line didn't help me get any further either.

Supersucky chip this 830 is indeed. Any ideas?

Re: New intel driver

I removed my AIGLX config from xorg.conf, didn't help. If i disable gdm and run it from console, startx, i get a blackscreen with a mousepointer but i can't move the mouse. It freezes then.

Even without a xorg.conf it doesn't start well sad

add

Xft*dpi: 96

or any number you want to your ~/.Xdefaults

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

Re: New intel driver

Works fine on

00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Have you tried to turn it off and on again?

Re: New intel driver

This new driver should support EXA and pageflipping. However, if I choose EXA as an AccelMethod, the server aborts complaining about a missing module, while the Page Flip option is ignored, since it requires a newer drm implementation. May be that these things are going to come with xorg-server 1.3.0 ?

Re: New intel driver

opengl apps like games or beryl or compiz still cause a complete lockup after some random time on my gma 950 with the new driver which makes opengl pretty unusable hmm

Yeah I thought about that and gave it a shot but same thing defaults straight to 98DPI. It's really odd and from the looks of it not quite ready to replace the i810 driver just yet.

Re: New intel driver

to specify a dpi of 98x98 , you can add under device section in xorg.conf
Option          "DPI"                   "98 x 98"

Re: New intel driver

I'm having trouble with the driver... I can't choose any resolution other than 1024x768, and when I try to go to "console mode" (ctrl+alt+f1,f2...) the computer crashes, leaving me with a strange screen with vertical color lines, only responding to ctrl+alt+supr.
I have a 845 chipset.
Help...

Re: New intel driver

Worked fine out of the box, aiglx/compiz included, no need for 915 resolution either. Crashed when I tried to reboot/shutdown, got that fuzzy black sreen.

Dell e1405, i945GM, 1440x900 with 1024x768 fb.

Re: New intel driver

whats wrong with seding that change into xorg.conf during post install? You know most everyone is going to miss it and start screaming at arch devs. I know its not a good thing to mess with people's configs but there is no *.pacnew management in arch and this would be very easy. Just a thought...

i don't think a sed is the way to go, i know it's a trivial change but still i hate the idea of pacman changing my config files, a post_install message should be enough imho

Too bad though that the driver has issues with my 830 chip. Is there a homepage for the driver tips /bugs?

You guys might be able to find more detailed infos here:
http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org

I have reports that some chipsets are not working or have problems. I will provide a small repo with a xorg-server 1.3.0.0 soon for you guys to try. Please follow http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7106 for news on this.

Re: New intel driver

Dri works fine on my "Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller".
Opengl seams to still be a bit flawed thou (tested to launch WoW, and it resulted into a lockup with nice colors all over screen...). Besides that, the screen flashes (bright/dark bright/dark and so on) a bit on startup(witch haven't occured when using i810), besides this all seams to be in order.
