I unable to read DVD video discs, although I can read DVD-R and CD.
I try to change the region using regionset but with no change.
here is the output of vlc, when I try to open DVD:

/etc/fstab
yours is probably
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
mine is
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf,iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
i had issues with some dvd's till i changed from auto to udf

Have you tried a different player? I ask because VLC has had various breakages on my machine that were fixed by rolling my own copy.

i tried mplayer and totem. it can't read the disk. i can't even mount it, but i'm not sure that i suppose to mount a DVD disc.

Sounds like the DVD is ruined or the DVD is not a DVD reader at all, but a CD reader. Really strange.
Do you have the same problem also playing as root?

Do you get any interesting output in dmesg when you try to read disks?
