I was changing some levels/settings in xfce4-mixer, which I understand to mostly be a frontend to alsamixer. Shortly after that, I noticed my sound no longer worked.
I've done these things so far:
-raise all levels in alsamixer, make sure none are muted
-make sure sound card is recognized in hwd
-make sure sound modules are loaded following alsa wiki page
-I'm in audio group
-tried different speakers
Still no sound. If I open something like xmms and play a file, the GUI "appears" to be playing (VU meter etc.) but there is no sound output. I haven't seen any error messages. Apps are set to use ALSA for output.
FWIW, I was also using Audacious at the time. Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I generally don't use audacious.

Basically what I'm wondering at this point is, is there some way to get ALSA back to its initial state, how it was when I first installed Arch? It seems silly that I'm having this trouble when the sound worked initially.
What if I compiled a temporary kernel without ALSA support, booted it, removed all traces of alsa-utils, then went back to my original kernel?
