Well, I was just installing Arch unto my laptop. So, I did the pacman -Syu. New kernel, wanted to reboot to test rc.conf too, so I rebooted. Well, now it seems like all the packages don't recognize the new kernel, and predictably many things break, not the least of, eth0. So, I'm just reinstalling. But giving a heads up that the new kernel update may note be ready =P I am an Arch newb, so I could be completely wrong..

a reinstall is not necessary with any linux distro
you can always chroot into it via live cd or with arch use install cd
at 1st prompt type
"vmlinuz root=/dev/sdXY"
where XY represents location of arch's root with this you boot from kernel on cd into your arch
more details here

also check this
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Reinstalling_GRUB
the lastone you can ignore the grub stuff cause your not having issues with boot loader
what your looking for here is mounting all stuff needed for proper chroot enviroment :/dev /proc /sys
