Hello all. It has come to my attention recently that at least three packages under my jurisdiction in unofficial require alsa as a depend. However this is not what i want as i know all three work without alsa. They need to be fixed but I cannot do it here locally as i have alsa installed and each time i compile the packages they are built with alsa support desipte trying to flag it out while building.
I need someone who does not use alsa and is willing to recompile these packages to email me (sarah@archlinux.org). I will provide the updated PKGBUILD complete with necessary depends.
I also have successfully built OpenOffice1.0.2 but i require someone with coding experience to help me resolve some final packaging issues. You will not have to build the package your self only advise me of what i can do to fulfill certain things.

FYI, the same problem can be observed for the 'sdl' package:
<pre>ldd /usr/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0<br><B>libasound.so.2 => not found</B></pre>
I'll will go and see if I can found some other packages in the same situation...
Sorry: I'm not using alsa

Same thing for:
- SDL_ttf
- SDL_image
- SDL_mixer

anypackage you found with that error that you know to be usable with OSS in unofficial please feel free to rebuild and submit to the /incoming tree or directly to me. Or if you know that they can be flagged out please let me know.
the idea is to have all packages usauble by those who want to use them.

OK, I've submitted tuxtype and tuxracer to /incoming/pkg_without_alsa.
By the way, I had to rebuild sdl, sdl_image and sdl_mixer without alsa to be able to rebuild these 2 packages.
sdl is not from unofficial but it also needs to be rebuilt to without alsa too: if sdl is built with alsa, it is not possible to build anything depending on sdl without alsa!
Quite annoying...

I've also submitted:
- sdl
- sdl_mixer
- sdl_ttf
- sdl_image
By the way, there is also 'zsnes' (not yet in unofficial, but IMHO, it should be included)

Thanks alot! i very muchly appreiate you taking the time out to rebuild these packages now, hopefully more users can benefit from their function or entertainment value.
zsnes will be upoaded (as all new packages will be) in the near future to unstable before being moved to unofficial. unstable will tell the user that the package is largely untested outside of the committer's box and that i *may* contain bugs. After a spell in unstable or a commiter deems it stable enough it will be moved to unofficial. Some packages such as cvs or development versions of application will stay in unstable until the developers deem it stable enough for a release version and at that point it will be moved to unofficial. An example of the latter is phoenix or mysql4 both are either development versions or cvs and have not met with official release versions by the applcaiton developers.

is it possible to have 2 packages, one with and one without alsa support?
I have to rebuild all those packages again if I want to use it with native alsa
apt-get install arch
Offline
if you load the snd-pcm-oss module, you can run normal applications using alsa
Offline
yes because they are not compiled with alsa does not mean you will not get sound. it just means that OSS users now can use the applications without loading alsa.
so there is not need to rebuild if as jk says you are loading the pcm module

thank you to orelien and jeff for fixing the packages avifile, tuxracer, tuxtype, sdl_image, sdl_mixer, sdl_ttf. Upon orelien's suggestion apeiro rebuilt sdl without alsa depends. all are now posted to their respective trees and now, hopefully, the OSS folks out there can enjoy the use of these apps/libraries with out rebuilding them.
as far as i can tell i no longer need assistance with OpenOffice so thanks to all.

If I play sound with the pcm-oss thingy I have to force the playback to 48000kHz. This resampling costs some cpu power.
In 100% pure alsa I don't have to resample
besides, one day those oss-folks download a 2.6(3.0?)kernel and what do they see?
apt-get install arch

exactly...one day...
