I might be doing a bunch of DVD transcoding (using dvd::rip and transcode), so I was thinking of getting a box dedicated to that task. It took my Athlon XP 2100+ about 6 hours to create a 1GB xvid file of an ole black and white movie I have on DVD. The quality was good, but 6 hours was a bit much.
I also have P4 1.8 Ghz that will be running Arch by the end of this weekend, so maybe I can make a transcoder "cluster".
Would a dual P3 or a AMD 64-bit chip run faster? Or maybe a superfast P4?

If you have the money to go all out, I'd recommend either an Athlon 64 FX or a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition.

If you have your heart set on Arch, I wouldn't get a 64bit chip. There is no 64bit Arch version, so you won't get full speed. It'd be a waste of money.
So I'd get a fast P4 or AthlonXP. I have a P4, not that it matters.

"clustering" your transcode operations may make it go faster but it may not. upping your ram would help a bit too. but a standard two hour movie will still take a bit of time. a regular movie take smy computer (XP 1800+) about three hours. and that is to the highest resolution possible with no trimming.
(transcode -i /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 -x dvd -g 720x480 -M 2 -V -j 16,0 - -B 2,0 -s 4.47 -U daredevil -y xvid -w 1759 -f23.976024 is an example of the settings i used in transcode for my ripping of my daredevil dvd)
