Did a new install. Conflict went away.
Don't know if it is relevant but, new configuration includes a separate partition for /var and, executed j2re installation immediately after building KDE.
Hope nobody did a lot of head scratching over this.
Just attempted j2re installation. Here is the resulting message:

It looks like the package downloaded incorrectly.
pacman -Rd j2re
rm /var/cache/pacman/pkg/j2re*
pacman -S j2re
