KDE system sounds don't work

I steup ALSA, and I have sound (flash, console beeps, etc), but I can't get any system sounds from kde.

When I log in, I get the error message:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: /dev/sound/dsp can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

My user has the appropriate permissions for audio, and that device definitely does exist.

As I said, I have sound, just not kde stuff.

Re: KDE system sounds don't work

Go to the "Control Center" > Sound & Multimedia > Sound System  and make sure you have a check mark on "Enable the sound system".
Also click on hardware and make sure you have "Select the audio device" set to "Auto"

R.

Edit: BTW make sure to run alsamixer and have all the controls enabled and set to max. volume and furthermore, that none of channels is muted, even if you think they may not be needed (your computer may have a different opinion on the matter ;-) )

Re: KDE system sounds don't work

One more thing. With regards to the error about the sound device ... /dev/sound/dsp
There should be a simlink in /dev (named: dsp) pointing to /sound/dsp make sure it is there.
