I get the following screen:
Why trying to login into gnome.
100% new Arch install yesterday (on Virtual PC), then following the wiki instructions to set X (using autoconfig tool) and gdm/gnome.
Any ideas whats happened here ?

make sure that your home folder is clear of strange files. If you use the /home folder on a different partition, probably there is a conflict. Try to remove the .* folders on your home directory and try again (.gconfd, gconf... etcetcetc). Also, take care on permissions. the folder you make for that user must belong to that user.
chown -hR youruser yourhomefolder
chgrp -hR users yourhomefolder
try these commands first as a root
try also install gnome-extra package

Hi, thanks for that, will try on another real machine from scratch later today.
I did install gnome, then gdm then gnome-extra.
My friend seems to think that default session for the gdm login is incorrect/screwed. I have 2 other working Linux machines that I can compare settings to.

Turns out it was the permissions for /tmp/ just fixed it using 1777.
