Radeontool not working

Hi,
I am setting up Arch Linux on a Thinkpad X31 laptop which uses an ATI Radeon M6 Mobility LY chip. Suspend-to-ram works well both with echo -n mem and with powersave -u but the backlight stays on. So I downloaded radeontool from sourceforge and installed it.
Unfortunately radeontool refuses to run and the output I get is
exec lspci failure
Radeon hardware not found in lspci output.
