Arch Linux Weekly Newsletter

*Jason Chu and Ben Mazer*

  Opening

Welcome to the Arch Linux Newsletter. This attempts to give you an ``at
a glance'' look at the world of Arch Linux.

  News

    * OpenSSL Upgrade

We've started the not-so-fun upgrade from openssl 0.9.6 to openssl
0.9.7. We've rebuilt about half of the 80 or so packages, and the
rest should be done within the next day or two.

Please be patient while we get all this stuff rebuilt. Some bigger
packages (like the collective works of GNOME) will take some time.

    This Week in Dev Land

    * Dale started a long discussion about mozilla plugins. Google gave
us an answer. All mozilla plugins will work out of the box, after
we rebuild them, from now on.
    * The developers have been scramling to update all of their openssl
dependent packages. I created a comprehensive list of all packages
that were linked to opnessl, so expect all the errors to go away
      very soon.
    * We are discussing releasing an 0.6.1 cd with the current openssl
upgrade and other large updates we've made. That way it could save
new users (who are installing off of cds) from having to download
all these updates all over again.
    * Three developers are going on holidays this week. We'll try to
keep up with package updates while they're gone.

  Discussions

    Forum Highlights

    * BlueBird started an Arch Linux Wallpaper contest. There are a
bunch of submissions, so you have no excuse for a bad looking box
      now. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3304
    * Wdemoss brought up the question of XFree86 4.4.0 again. This time,
it was to debate whether Arch should use the X.org server, which
was a fork of XFree86 4.4.0RC2. This decision is still under
      debate. Read the thread at:
      http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3286
    * Alcattle wanted to know why Guests were allowed to post in the
forum. Him and most of the posters were against the idea, claiming
that it would cause more tolling. Join the debate over this way:
      http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3243
    * Multiple threads (such as this one:
      http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=3328) were started
because of the OpenSSL upgrade. Please refrain from posting for a
week or two on this, because the devs have to rebuild many packages.

    Mailing List Highlights

    * Wolfgang Pichler raised the question of replacing devfs with udev
in the default Arch install. Udev still isn't mature and it is too
risky to switch over at this point. As it matures though, Arch
will have to switch because DevFS is obsoleted, and will be
removed from the default kernel eventually. Read the thread here:
      http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 01106.html

      TUR Mailing List

We welcome Brice Carpentier as our newest Trusted User. We are still
looking for more packagers, so contact the other TUs for the details on
sponsorship (or email the TUR Mailing List).

Testing has really ramped up this week, and many packages were moved to
and from staging. Expect INCOMING to get cleaner in the next few weeks.
For any would-be submitters though, please make sure your package isn't
already made in INCOMING, STAGING, or the official repos. We don't need
any extra clutter during the cleanup process.

  Packages

    Package Highlights

    * OpenSSL 0.9.7. Arch finally made the jump to OpenSSL 0.9.7.
Unfortunately packages link to OpenSSL by version, so every
package which depends on OpenSSL has to be rebuilt. You may want
to hold off on this package for a few days.
    * Subversion 1.0.1 was released and repackaged. This is the first
release since the major 1.0 announcement. This fixes a few major
      bugs. Read the announcement here:
      http://subversion.tigris.org/servlets/N … ItemID=638
    * Evolution 1.4.6 has been released. It fixes many bugs, so all
users should upgrade. Read the release notes here:
      http://developer.ximian.com/projects/ev … 1.4.6.html

  Closing

As a side note, I have started a project that attempts to test random
packages already in the repositories. In it's current state, the
packaging system ignores packages once they're in the official trees
until an error is found. This makes many mistakes go unnoticed. I'm
calling this the "Package Review Project". You can read all the info at:
http://arch.gooeylinux.org. My hope is that the developers will
eventually accept it and widespread testing can occur. Eventually I'd
like to create a network of testers that could be used by the developers
to test major changes (e.g. GTK 2.4 or the new OpenSSL).

We already have a few dedicated testers, and I'd like to thank Lavapunk
for his hard work. He's tested just about every package I've listed. He
has also found many packaging errors, and is helping to prove how needed
this system is.

That's all for this week. Stay tuned for more exciting Arch Linux
development.
