hm... that's strange... trey've made an update concerning 4.0.1 on the kde.org today. Is the final version of 4.0.1 available just now? I don't get the point.

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

I just installed Arch on a spare 15GB partition to play around with kde4. I have kdesvn on two other Gentoo ~x86 testing boxes- works very well. Also have run it on openSuse for a few months, so I pretty well know what I'm doing now with it.
Anyway, I used the kdesvn-build script found here:
http://kdesvn-build.kde.org/ and http://kdesvn-build.kde.org/documentation/

I first installed Gnome, and then used the kdesvn-build script as my user- did NOT create another dedicated user for kde4, or install kde3 at all.  I found doing that causes more problems than it's worth. The entire kdesvn is installed as user in the home directory, and using Arch's qt4 and other kde4 deps on the repositories. The only thing was soprano wasn't up to 2.0,, but it built fine anyway.

Anyway, once I set up the build script config, and installed the deps, the install was a breeze, with revision 772056 (has panel resize). I boot it with GDM, with no problem- got it right the first try. I have to say this is the easiest method I've done yet. There were a few deviations I used to avoid mistakes with environmental settings I had made when trying to install kde4 on PCLOS. Thie procedure I used should work fine on any distro. If anyone is interested, I'll post a brief walk-through.

Once setup, to keep current with kdesvn is just one simple command in your /home/user/kdesvn directory. BTW, at this point svn is noticably better than the 4.0 versions on several distros.  This is currently reported as Version (KDE 4.0.61 >= 20080207) under Help -->  about kde in any of the kde apps.

Here's what actually built, and only one failed, but that's an svn version problem, not the script's.
kdelibs
kdepimlibs
kdebase
kdemultimedia
kdegames
kdenetwork
kdeadmin
kdepim
kdeutils
kdeartwork
kdegraphics
kdetoys
kdeedu
extragear/plasma
extragear/graphics

Message is FAILED TO BUILD    for
extragear/libs

EDIT: Completely rebuilt today (updated all to svn r772551), and extragear/libs now builds. smile Think I'll try refining the kdesvn-build script a little- maybe add my normal Gentoo gcc-4.2 CXX flags, which do build kde4 svn fine on Gentoo.

Versions are tagged a week before they are released so that distros can build packages and have them ready for release date (today i believe?). The next time I compile kde4 will be for 4.0.2.

If you're having problems with kde3 loading as well, try chmod -x /etc/rc.d/kde3.sh then rebooting and see if that helps.

This server is old. Update it or get rid of it. I spent 2 hours installing it, to find out that half of the stuff doesn't work.

Here's a better x86_64 server:

Server = http://jakub.markconstable.com/x86_64/

Edit: Lol, I see that someone already posted this. Ok, never mind.

Edit
sad I've run into a problem, while compiling kdelibs4-svn from AUR. It takes a looong time to compile the package(more than an hour on my PC) and the error occured on the 93%(((( It seems that i'll have to wait untill 4.0.2 is released.(and i don't want to install kdemod4 yet)

I haven't compiled much on Arch yet (new user, and just have compiled kdesvn manually in my /home dir, as described above), but I know Gentoo well and have compiled kdelibs kde4 svn many times.  When you post errors, you need to give more of the gcc output so as to give clues as to what it errored out on. Just failed at "93%"  doesn't help much.

That said, it sounds like you might have a missing dep problem, or that the specific kdelibs svn revision you tried had a problem.  BTW, unless you have a very fast machine, like over an athlon-xp 3200, one hour for a kdelibs compile is not unusual.

Hello!

Don't use kdelibs4-svn from aur.
It install to /opt and tardo's pkgbuild install to /usr. You must modify tardo pkgbuild to use svn (trunk).

It take me 4 shot to be able to compile svn version. Kde4 repo is very active and sometime thing are broken.
If you want my 2 pkgbuild (svn), tell me and I will add it here.

How do I get the KDE4 version of KFTPGrabber? I use it frequently and would prefer to have a native app instead of a KDE3 one.

Its in trunk/extragear, but it hasn't been updated since version 0.8.1 which was in April last year.

Well if that's the case can you recommend any other Qt FTP client?

Well, it is true that there has been no release. But I was able to compile the svn version using qt4 some time in early December and since then committing has been going on. Why not try building it from svn?

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

anyone been able to use kdesvn-build lately?

it fails here because qt4 is too old... if someone is manging to compile, can he give a how-to (with kdesvn-build config file) ?

A new version of QT (4.4 Technology Preview) has been put into trunk, which is what trunk (KDE4.1) is now developed against. KDE 4.0.x is still using QT 4.3.4 (i think) and should be unaffected by this.

I did try a couple of days ago but hit some build issues (not using kdesvn-build though, so I can't speak for it). There's been some action on kde-core-devel mailing list about issues and patches, if I have any luck when I try next I'll let you guys know.

EDIT: Here's a list of recent qt-copy issues from the mailing list. See if any of them match up with what you're seeing.

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

nah... qt4.4 build fine for me... so did kdesupport... but everything afterwards claimed qt4.4 could not be found.
I guess this is a kdesvn-build error, as it SHOULD build the thing statically in $HOME

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

Rasi,
On Arch, I just compiled qt-copy and kdesupport (now working on ldelibs) with the kdesvn-build script.  It did update the qt-copy version to 4.4., with some patches, but apparently only to revision 20080214, the last one known to allow kde to compile.

However, on my Gentoo boxes we are using an ebuild by fidc2 (on gentoo forums kde4 thread) that patches qt4.4 with the qt-copy patches from 0214. Stuff builds OK, but still major problems with kwin/plasma. dolphin won't launch, and konqueror, and resizing windows is badly broken.

This seems due to qt4 and kde4 versions still not syncing or patches not right.  We are still waiting for the devs to fix stuff.

I just started to try it on Arch to see what was up.  BTW, I just manually updated soprano to 2.0.2, as the version on the arch repos is too old- and could cause problems.  Wish someone would make an updated soprano pkg and put it in the Arch repos. wink

Bottom line- currently kdesvn and qt-4.4 are pretty problematic.

EDIT: OH yeah- it does find 4.4:

-- Found Qt-Version 4.4.0-snapshot-20080214 (using /home/wrc/qt4/bin/qmake)

EDIT2:  kdelibs and kdepimlibs built fine, but kdebase failed on nepomuk.
However, as a temporary work-around just to get on with it, I commented out the nepomuk line in kdebase/runtime/CMakeLists.txt, and then kdebase compiled fine- of course without nepomuk support.
