I've looked around on these forums and on IRC for a while and I still haven't been able to solve this problem.
I'm running the latest default Arch kernel (2.6.21) on a Sony VAIO VGN-FS690P laptop, with an NVIDIA Geforce Go 6200 graphics card.
Ever since I've enabled the official NVIDIA driver (installed with Pacman, not some random driver,) I have no virtual/framebuffer consoles once X starts. If I try to switch to them, I get a black screen. When my computer is in the process of shutting down, I don't see any shutdown messages, just a black screen.
Beryl is also affected by this; I have no window decorations (no titlebars, etc,) when running it, and when I run Beryl from the terminal, there is a continuously repeating error message about the framebuffer, so I'm thinking it's the cause.
I've tried adding 'vga=773' to the appropriate kernel line in my /boot/grub/menu.lst but this had no effect.
Anyone know why I have no framebuffer consoles, or why the framebuffer just plain isn't working?

Try a different nvidia-driver :
nvidia-96xx
instead of
nvidia

Actually, everything works perfectly after installing the other (96xx) driver. I didn't realize the Geforce Go 6200 was an 'older card' (as per the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/How … IA_driver)
Thanks so much!
