Mounting Local Filesystems busy forever

Just performed pacman -Suy and rebooted my laptop and stuck at "Mounting Local Filesystems". Since my cdrom drive is faulty and no floppy drive, is there any way to log to the system and do the repair works?

Boot the failsafe option (or add "single" to the kernel line if you use lilo instead).

how to boot in failsafe mode? I'm using grub & this is my entry

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda2 ro vga=773

i've tried

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda2 ro single

but still stuck at "Mounting Local Filesystems   [BUSY]"

That should have done it. I guess you'll need a working CDROM to fix it (or maybe take the disk out and attach it to another machine).

After an upgrade I`ve got the same problem. My Arch stuck at "Mounting Local Filesystems".
What should we do now?
OS reinstallation is good for Microsoft products users. Since I had moved from this M$hit I don`t wanna do this anymore maybe except some image recovery.
My Archie experienced a lot of bad things done by his master, he can`t simply end like that. ;-)

Why don't you chroot in and downgrade the kernel then?  Also, try changing the boot line from ro to rw

Do you have reiserfs? Sometimes it takes a very long time to mount.

I was trying to go back to previous kernel, but I couldn`t run pacman after chroot from Knoppix. (command not found)
Than I tried run from Fallack kernel.
I received:

Than I`ve choosed another kernel - Suspend2 and whole booting process was all right.

I`ve downgraded my both base & ck kernels, but X-server failed, because nvidia driver module is newer than required.
No offence, but pacman repository is becoming to often ill-considered.

I compiled kernels without autodetect module and Linux boot without problems.
Two weeks later, 2 days ago probably after some upgrades Arch again stack on Mounting...

Can someone help me and give more possible reasones of stucked Mounting Local Filesystems?
Lack of autodetect module or not did not help anymore.
I`ve installed new kernels several times without visible errors. Friend said that during the compillation only the runtime errors are invisible.
I`m watching KDE desktop only from Knoppix right now or Windows XP ordinary desk. ;-/

After many Arch boot tries at last Mounting... was done. I don`t know, but it looks exactly a hardware problem again.

I found out!
Alternative MS Windows during shutdown is making something weird with its partitions, that after that Linux cannot mount filesystems - also vfat partitions.
When I simple do a Windows reset, then it`s all right with filesystems in Linux opinion. ;-)
