The last version of sane that works for me is 1.0.18-2. Both find-sane-scanner and scanimage -L recognize the scanner (an Epson Perfection 1640SU) and the software works without a flaw. Group (scanner) is correct. Every succeeding version from 1.0.18-3 to the current 1.0.18-6 do not work. sane-find-scanner recognizes the scanner correctly, but scanimage -L does not, and xsane does not.
Question: is this a configuration problem -- maybe permissions, or some other simple matter, or is this a bug?
I reinstalled 1.0.18-2, and things work again, but it's an annoyance none the less.
Should I file a bug?

Answered my own question. For reasons I do not fully understand, upgrading sane required a reconfiguration of /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and the epson confguration file. I also added: export SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE="epson:libusb:001:003" to ~/.bashrc.
