is there a new way to get floppy support?. i have always (with most recent changes) placed floppy in modules, that does not seem to work anymore. have i missed something new along the way?.
just to add. . .
the only thing non-default about my install, is i am using kdemod.
my user is added to the right groups, as far as i know. storage, optical, floppy, tty? (is tty necessary? added after reading some related posts here) etc. it has been working great until a week or 2 ago. sorry i cant say exactly when it vanished. the drive works np in windows.

Hi, I had the same problem after installing Arch 2007-05 on a legacy Pentium Pro 200 box. No floppy. Everything else worked just fine. I manually modprobe'd module "floppy" and all was well again. I have since added it to the MODULES directive of /etc/rc.conf and it works perfectly for me. This doesn't solve your problem I know, but it does give you two useful data points:
1/ You are not alone - there are others of us out there that use floppies!
2/ Module floppy *is* the answer to the problem. Test this out by modprobe'ing it manually and then checking /dev to see if /dev/fd0 suddenly springs into existance. It should. If it doesn't, check dmesg to see what the kernel thought of your efforts!

ok. how do i manually modprobe floppy?. sorry its not something i have exp with. floppy has been added to rc.conf from the start and has always been enough, but now it seems more is needed to be done in order to get floppy. i took a guess and entered modprobe floppy into console, but it did nothing.

you do a...
sudo modprobe floppy
I guess I'm a little confused. Is it no longer sufficient to add the floppy to fstab as /dev/fd0 mounting under /mnt or /media ?
dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto rw,user,noauto 0 0
-- archlinux 是一个极好的 linux。

i dont know. i have tried mounting it manually, no go. never had to do anything more than add it to MODULES in rc.conf. sudo modprobe floppy just gives errors like no such directory.

as root
add to /etc/fstab
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto rw,user,noauto 0 0
run
modprobe floppy
sudo when setup correctly = root access

Did you create the floppy dir under /mnt ? If fstab is pointing to a directory that doesn't exsist you'll get an error.

yes. the dir has been there. the floppy worked fine for the last year. its just recently (within the last month) that it no longer appears. i have a fd0 and fl folder in /mnt btw.
the default fstab looked like this. /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 vfat user,noauto 0 0
i changed it to these, and every other combination without success.
/dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 auto ro,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 auto rw,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
no worky! 8(

Could you post the exact error it puts out?

Floppy drive could be broken , just a thought, its happened to me. see if you can get your bios to do a floppy drive check.

the drive is fine, it works in windows. i actually did set the bios to check the drive pretty much immediately after this issue started.
just to add. when i boot into arch, it searches for the drive and the drive lights up like it should. so the OS knows the drive is there. heh.
