New LCD Monitor

Well, I finally got out of the stoneage, and replaced my broken crt with a samsung 22" widescreen, and so far I love it! Small problem though. I'm using DVI cables, and whenever my computer leaves my bios screen, it says something about "not perferred resolution" and i can't see the grub menu until I change it back to digital source. Also, I can't kill X, or start in init1, otherwise my screen turns black, and I have no output. Does anyone know what to do to let me view init1/grub?

Radeon x800pro

I didn't do anything strange to grub, but that isn't really a problem. The problem is if i ever do something bad and have to boot into cui, I wont be able to see anything...

EDIT: I can sort of remember the message I get after the bios boot screen (I'm at work, so I can't test it)

it says something about "Optimum resolution: 1680x1050"

If i remember correctly, there is a setting for resolution in grub, correct?

But on to the more important problem, viewing CUI.

Re: New LCD Monitor

My monitor seems to scale the default grub resolution up with no problems...

for cli you could try to add vga=795 on kernel boot options, that works for me atleast.

Got samsung 225bw and using fglrx drivers... although the drivers prolly dont kick in that early in the boot process smile

Edit: what does this mean:

it says something about "not perferred resolution" and i can't see the grub menu until I change it back to digital source.

Dvi is always digital aint it? should be 60 Hz also, you've prolly noobed sumthin up tongue

Re: New LCD Monitor

So yeah.... I used what you said, and grub loaded! when i chose arch, it was 1680x1050 (i noticed that there is an arch logo during boot up, who knew!).

So now, i get to the part where it says "starting simple login manager"
and..... i get a black screen.

it starts switching between digital and analog, and i can't do anything.

someone please help sad

Re: New LCD Monitor

So an update.

I'm confused.

Trying to run with a vga=851 (which I've been googling, apparently its suppose to give 1680x1050 rez), I get a beautiful screen for all the modules loading, looks to be 1680x1050, but when it gets to SLiM, I get a black screen, and my monitor power button starts blinking.

When I start without a vga=, I get a really low res module loading screen (probably 800x600), but SLiM loads, and I'm able to get into X.

It seems to be pretty random when I get the "Optimum resolution not selected" message to pop up and start dancing on my screen
