Non-functional CD-ROM drive

This desktop's only CD-ROM drive seems to be not working. By using Google I found someone with similar symptoms, but I am not completely sure how can this be fixed on my mother's desktop.

Did you check with several CD-ROMs? Also, did you try with some other linux or windows (if you have it)? If it fails with all, it is most likely a hardware problem. Another thing: linux often gives me this error while trying to copy VCD files, don't know why, but if it's a VCD you are trying to run, it most probably won't work.

Sorry for not specifying that before. I have tried it with multiple CD-ROMs and none worked. However, the drive works perfectly under *buntu.

Scanning through the list, I found one more weird message.

ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... error, file /DSDT.aml not found.

I googled it, and I found this thread:

It seems to be replied, but what exactly did the person who solved it mean by using ide-cd instead of ide-scsi?

Edit: The problem seems to be that audio cd's shouldn't be mounted. Others can be mounted using mount command.

ide-cd and ide-scsi are modules in the kernel. What that person most probably did was to rmmod the ide-cd and modprobe ide-scsi. After googling around a bit, i found out that you shouldn't be needing ide-scsi, in fact it may even cause problems, it was actually required earlier for SCSI emulation in the kernel, back when there was no proper support. Nowadays, the kernel has full support for SCSI devices.
