X server uses lots of CPU without apparent reason.

My X server uses lots of cpu also for trivial tasks.
I notice this problem overall when I am using the terminal, using laTeX for compiling a source file makes the X process using the 100% of the CPU forcing latex to slow down!
Just using 'ls' in a directory may take X using the 10-15% of the CPU! My system is not a monster of speed, but I still have a Intel Duo 2Ghz...

Any idea?

I do.... is it once again the curse of x86_64 + ATI?

Sorry for butting in - newbie, but I noticed this thread immediately.

It might not be x86_64. I have a Sempron+ATI, with pretty much the same problem. Not quite as bad - I can do an "ls" without too much hassle - but definitely similar. Switching workspaces can take 2 or 3 seconds. Personally, without any hard evidence, I blame X.org 7. I have Mandriva 2006 on another partition that absolutely flies, but every current distro I've tried has this problem to some degree.
