need help with sound when using an interactive terminal session [slvd]

When logging in via kdm with fluxbox, openbox or kde, and launching an app that uses sdl audio from the command line, i get no audio. I'm thinking some setting is missing but I cant figure out what. Running from kde run dialog results in sound!

1) if I use the xfce4-terminal program, and 'use as login shell', i then get sound when launching from the terminal.
2) I did an diff of the env settings with and without 'use login shell', and tried manually exporting all the env variables in an interactive shell, but it didnt work.
3) if I invoke a new login shell with 'bash --login', I get no sound.
4) sourcing /etc/profile from within an interactive shell doesn't result in sound.
5) same problem with xterm or konsole...

What else is done with a login shell other than sourcing /etc/profile? It doesn't seem to be anything in that file that's responsible for the sound working...

[edit] Something in my .bashrc was screwing up the sound. once I removed that file it works now...
