There's "a rat" in "separate" ...

From the latest ARCH upgrade to openoffice-base:

The en_US spellchecker is no longer included. A seperate pkg is now
available. Use "pacman -S openoffice-spell-en" to install it.

Maybe that spellchecker should be put back in!

heh, at least, I don't think that mistake should be made by us french ppl big_smile
Because the french word is close : "séparé" and there isn't any confusion possible from the spelling that it's an "a" in french.

English is just weird wink

Re: There's "a rat" in "separate" ...

We Americans are funny critters that have an innate need to remove the logic out of things. It historically goes something like this:

"Well, the British invented this stupid system, and we're not British anymore, so we'll make it even stoopider" (See the Imperial Measurement System: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_measurement).

Of course the 'proper' form is spell-checker because it's an abbreviation.

Kinda like the Koreans and the Chinese, except that Hangul is actually an improvement on the Chinese system...

That's true. For example, have you seen the way that you can spell "fish" this way: ghoti ?

     gh as in "laugh"
     o as in "women"
     ti as in "nation"

I think our confusing spelling has to do with the combination of germanic and romance word stocks, plus that fact that our spelling often reflects pronunciation at the time of the early days of printing.

Funny smile
But I didn't know the o in "women" was the same as i in "fish". I would probably pronounce both incorrectly big_smile
