hwd - can't download it

Hi! I'm new to linux and decided to go with archlinux first. So far so good except I can't find this hwd tool. I've been following the beginner's guide in the wiki setting up Xorg and using "pacman -S hwd" I receive "error: 'hwd' : not found in sync db. Also everything is sync'd and up to date.

EDIT: Ok I found out it was not ported yet to x86_64 (unfortunately I forgot to mention my arch) and it is suggested I use hwdetect. So how do I use hwdetect to configure xorg?

Re: hwd - can't download it

Welcome to Arch.

Are you on 64 bit? If so I don't think that hwd works. It was brought up recently in another thread, but I don't remember where.

Re: hwd - can't download it

I think everything is ok now. I use an nvidia card so I used "nvidia-xconfig". After though I looked through the xorg.conf and noticed it was properly modified by nvidia but still doesn't show detailed info (model, etc.) like the examples in the wiki or is that because they used the hwd tool?

Also now that that is all setup I want to install the DE. I've chosen to try Enlightenment 17. I've been doing more reading and since I'm on x86_64 I need to use the one by takhis (http://bbs.archlinux.org/

Ok I went ahead and setup everything. Now when I run it I get
"enlightenment: error while loading shared libraries: libcurl.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"?
I searched around for this problem and seen threads but no specific solutions.

Re: hwd - can't download it

Yeah, E17 needs a rebuild against the newest Curl. I haven't noticed Takhis 64 bit repo being updated in a long time, although I haven't tried in the last few days. You can get the PKGBUILDs from Takhis site though.

Re: hwd - can't download it

I did some C++ programming a while back in MSVC and Cygwin but I think that's a bit over my head now lol. So should I just wait until someone rebuilds it? I guess I'll check out kdemod for now. BTW thanks for yout help.

Re: hwd - can't download it

You may be waiting a while. It's looks as if the last Takhis 64 bit builds are from a January 14. Somewhere buried deep within this thread:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=23361

Is a script to automate the process.

By the way, making packages off of pre-existing PKGBUILD files is simple. There's a Wiki article on the command makepkg. That should help get you up to speed.

Re: hwd - can't download it

FYI, the e17 packages in community have been updated to the latest snapshot (and rebuilt against latest curl).

Re: hwd - can't download it

I did "pacman -S e17". Added it to ~/.xinitrc and then did "startx". Still getting:
"enlightenment: error while loading shared libraries: libcurl.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"?

Do I need to uncomment unstable or testing in pacman.conf?

Re: hwd - can't download it

I haven't used e17 or had to care about libcurl before, but this might help: # pacman -S curl

(http://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/ libcurl homepage)

Re: hwd - can't download it

The mirrors that I use havn't synced yet either. The packages are up at ftp.archlinux.org, but I don't use that one. Maybe there are sync issues?

Re: hwd - can't download it

Once your mirror sync, you'll need to use "pacman -Sy e17" (with the y switch to update the db on your system)

Re: hwd - can't download it

I can't update to the latest version of e17 because my wife loves the Engage toolbar, and the latest versions drop it.  So my solution to this was to run as root:

ln -s /usr/lib/libcurl.so /usr/lib/libcurl.so.3

Seems to be working great.
