mounting a zip drive

I have switched to the slack style static dev system [I hate devfs]

/etc/fstab

/dev/hdd4     /mnt/zip    vfat  user,umask=002,gid=100,unhide,quiet  0 0
# my slackware fstab entry no good under arch

but my /dev/hdd4 does not exist

how would I make this for a static dev system?

Off to using Peanut and Slackware, no hard feelings but I need my CD to burn, PDA and scanner to connect and arch won't do it.
