power off usb flash drive

How can I fully power off an usb flash drive? (Just like I can do in Windows with the "Safely remove" option)

When I just unmount the device, it's still blinking with it's light, meaning there's still some power in it...
I tried with eject, but it just returns "eject: unable to open `/dev/sdc1'"

Re: power off usb flash drive

Unmounting the device will allow you to safely remove it.  Typically, when you unmount a usb key, the icon will vanish from your desktop (depending on your environment, e.g. GNOME/KDE).  At that point, you can safely unplug it.

Re: power off usb flash drive

On mine if I right click I get either "unmount or safely remove"
