Sound with hda-intel

Hey everybody!
Now I'm back - have been gone a while... A long while wink

But, just one thing I can't figure out. My sound. I have a hda-intel sound card but I can't get any sound of it. I have installed alsa-utils, alsa-lib and alsa-oss. And edited a ocean of files (with some help from a very active danish Archer - but we couldn't figure out why we couldn't get any sound at all).
Anybody who knows something about this card? (It's a onboard intel card).
When I try to play a file in mplayer with "mplayer -ao alsa /filename.mp3/ogg" it looks like it is playing, but no sound come out of my speakers (I have turned everything up in alsamixer).

Somebody who can help me? smile

Re: Sound with hda-intel

This may sound like a really stupid question, but.... Is the volume muted?  As far as I know, whether you're running KDE or GNOME, all the DE's mute the audio by default.  You have to load the volume management software and unmute the speakers (Volume Control under GNOME, KMixer under KDE) before you'll get any audio.

Re: Sound with hda-intel

The only help I can offer is to show you which modules the hwd tool detected for my Intel audio hardware (Sigmatel STAC 92xx Audio):

MODULES=( ... mii snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel soundcore ... )

Otherwise, all I've done is installed alsa-utils, alsa-lib and alsa-oss as well.  I also run the alsa daemon, but I think it's only required to restore the volume settings between sessions.

Re: Sound with hda-intel

You shouldn't have to edit any files (aside from rc.conf, what oceans of files would you possibly edit??) and you shouldn't run alsaconf either, since that can screw things up. Please read the wiki article for alsa and follow the steps listed (and don't add your own steps!):
