Hi-
Not new to linux, new to arch. Looking forward to trying it out.
I'm gonna try it on an old dell inspiron 5000 (ca 2000). I have a trendnet card (atheros), and I'm using wpa encryption. Can I get by with the base iso or should I go with the bigger one?
Thanks

Base install gives you just that; lean mean console machine. You can then build it into whatever you need.
The base install is actually the recommended process to install Arch. It is small, and saves you a lot of time in the long run, because you will have the latest updates to large packages straight from the repos.
The install guides make it easy to build up from the base system into what you want; KDE, GNOME, XFCE, etc.

Thanks -- I guess i wasn't clear enough though. If wifi is my only way to get on the net, soes the base install provide me with the tools to make that connection (atheros driver, wpa_aupplicant, etc.)?

Everything you need is included in the base install, except madwifi. For that, look for an addons/ subdirectory in the same ftp directory as the iso you downloaded, and read addons/README-ADDONS.TXT.

Great, thanks!

There's also a nifty howto in the Wiki which allows you to install Arch even if you only have WiFi, using Knoppix as a bridge.

Everything that used to be in ADDONS is now included in the ISOs.
