Why so slow?!?

It is vague I know, but I have no idea of what is going on. I have two computer with ATI cards (9700 pro and X1600) in both fglx_glxgears and glxgears work, the direct rendering is active... But while I can play Doom 3 in Windows I can't in linux. I have to start it with much lower detail ( 640x480 vs 1024x768 in the second comp) and yet its frame rate drops after a minute or so of playing...
I have the same problem in sauerbraten, it starts in the default level pretty well... if I start a SP map the framerate drops.
It is pretty sad since I like publicizing ArchLinux and linux in general and I have a cold sweat when anyone ask: what about games? and I need to answer: I have to reboot in WinXP... :S

I tried disabling agpgart as suggested here http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.16.20.html but it seems the newest fglrx does not manage agp anymore.

Every, really every, help is welcome...

Re: Why so slow?!?

Haven't you heard that ati sucks?

You get about 50% of the framerate off windows with fglrx driver and even less with the opensource driver...

Nexuiz for example i had 60 fps with radeon9600 when looking at wall and when the other players move its 1 fps, finally fixed that with the latest driver and disabling some options.

Anyways try to disable some shaders to get a decent fps and try to buy nvidia next time. I know I will smile

check phoronix.com for more Ati tests / bashing.

Re: Why so slow?!?

Mainly nexuiz for me, running on 6600gt nvidia card. Had a fx5200 before and results were painfully slow.
Not sure how this compares with ATI,as i've never used one. Other nex'ers also report large Suck value if they use ATI

just out of interest, i swapped to Windows XP to troubleshoot a lockup, ie to isolate the problem from the OS, and found the game to feel less responsive with same video settings. Lockup problem was traced to gkrellm/pekwm hogging resource.

Shaders: go into Options menu's and where you see features like coronas, dynamic lights etc, turn them all off.
