No X for user account

I've just installed arch on a virtual machine to see if I like it. (Been using Ubuntu)

I have 2 small glitches:

a) Root can startx no problems, but try it as a normal user... no way. I get:

Could not open or create the file "(null)"; this indicates that there may be a problem with your configuration, as many programs will need to create files in your home directory. The error was "Failed to create file '/tmp/gconf-test-locking-file-EGQGVT': Permission denied" (errno = 13)

I added the user like it said on the site:

# useradd -m -s /bin/bash johndoe
# passwd johndoe

b) The fonts have no anti-aliasing and look like something from the 1980's. How do I improve this? roll

Thanks.

Re: No X for user account

for a, i believe the /tmp directory needs permissions changed so the new user can write to it. lots of people have had this problem.  as root, issue a chmod +w /tmp should do the trick i believe.

for b, installing ttf-ms-fonts package should help a bit.

Re: No X for user account

OK, so I did chmod 777 /tmp and that did the trick. Thanks. I'll try with the fonts as soon as gnome-extra downloads and installs. (100+ MBs...)

OK, X works fine and the fonts are better now that I installed gnome-extra. I think it came with some extra fonts and it made things look much better.
