zsh keyboard shortcuts gone

I have been using zsh for a while, and I can't remember doing anything that would have this effect, but most of my standard terminal shortcuts have vanished.

Ctrl+[a|e|p|n|k] don't do anything anymore.  They actually output the characters I'm hitting.  So Ctrl+k prints "^K".  Ctrl+[u|l] still work.

If I fire up bash, they keystrokes work.

Any idea what is going on here?  This is very frustrating.

Maybe put bindkey -e into your .zshrc

That did it!  I wonder what I did to warrant that change, but I'll take it.  Thank you!
