Good HTML editor for KDE/Gnome?

I am looking for a good HTML editor which is similar to Dreamweaver's text mode (Homesite?) which autocompletes tags and lets me put in hex codes for a colour selector etc. It would be best if it is a KDE/Qt app, but I'll still look at Gnome/Gtk apps.

In Gnome, the application I think you mean is Bluefish.  It's near-identical to the original homesite (which I used for ages and ages.)

It's in the repos.  I don't know if there is an equivalent for KDE.

For KDE, Quanta is the best. It's in the kdewebdev package.

Re: Good HTML editor for KDE/Gnome?

I favor Quanta for a development environment but there is also NVU in the repos, that is a relatively close "knock off" of Dreamweaver. I however, do not like programs like DW and NVU because the "do things" for me to "help me out"  and I much rather have control over the code.

Hope this helps.

R.

Re: Good HTML editor for KDE/Gnome?

I personally don't like WYSIWYG editors. I feel they add unnecessary code which slows it down. I just found that the text mode in Dreamweaver was very good smile

EDIT: Also, is there any way to get Quanta by itself? I tried installing kdewebdev, but it includes things I don't really need. Quanta is definitely the same as Homesite maybe better!

Re: Good HTML editor for KDE/Gnome?

Quanta has been merged into the KDE Web Dev project and is now releasing simultaneously, in the same tarball. Arch generally tries not to split software distributed as a single archive into separate packages. I'm sure it's possible to make your own PKGBUILD that builds and installs just Quanta, but I wouldn't bother. Quanta is by far the largest part of kdewebdev, you're not losing much disk space by keeping the rest.

You may be able to get a smaller install with KDEWebDev by using the version from KDEMod.

I'm using the KDEmod package and there doesn't seem to be any Quanta Plus package... Oh well. I have plenty of HDD space smile

Re: Good HTML editor for KDE/Gnome?

Well ... here is an alternative that is not well known in most Linux circles that I have been around, but I am convinced it's the best (free) multi-syntax, mult-platform editor that works in Linux, Mac OS X and Windows:

http://www.activestate.com/Products/kom … tures.plex

Since I have a much longer history with Windows (15 years) than with Linux (5 years), I was a little frustrated with editors available in Linux since I had a lot of great free and commercial options available in Windows. I remained frustrated for quite a while until I found Komodo Edit for use in Linux. I liked it so much that I switched to its exclusive use in Windows as well.

I know editors are a very personal preference, but I have tried all the ones mentioned here (others as well such as Eclipse ... I dislike Java apps a great deal), and Komodo fits my bill where the others did not.

One possible niggle with Komodo ... it starts a little slow, but I quickly forgave it for that.

Give it a try, it can't hurt I guess.

PS
I have not used any of ActiveState's commercial (pay) products.
