remote desktop, enable before gdm logged in?

OK i was using a gnome box via remote desktop, the built-in one, and the system locked up so i rebooted it via SSH.  now, i presume the box is at the GDM screen, and i can't log in with remote desktop anymore cause i think it hasn't been logged in locally and the service started? i installed the standalone vncserver via ssh and started that, but when i log in all i get is a blank blue screen and i cant do anything.  any ideas how to get past the GDM screen with the remote desktop software that's built in to gnome or how to start the program?  thanks

You can stop GDM, and try to do a startx with the right user. If you do that in a screen session you can close ssh and keep using remote desktop, the one from gnome.
