Re: trying... compiz fusion

Ok, so since today's package update, I can launch fusion-icon, but all window decorations and panels disappear completely.  When I run fusion-icon, I still get the following error:
* Decorator "" is invalid.

What changes have you made to your xorg?

Thanks for your time

Edit: and beryl works...

Re: trying... compiz fusion

When I installed compiz-fusion and started fusion-icon, it also happened as you said. Then, I right-clicked in the cube icon on the tray and selected Select Window Manager -> Compiz. It seems that there is no WM selected by default, so you have to choose one.

Re: trying... compiz fusion

I recently tried compiz-fusion, followed the wiki, and have the same problem with no window decorations.  Selecting any of the WM's from the compiz-fusion icon doesn't restore them either.  The compiz-fusion icon also appears to be missing and is replaced with the generic gtk not found icon.

Re: trying... compiz fusion

Select a Window decorator Emerald worked for me, then a WM fixed it for me.

Re: trying... compiz fusion

You say that Beryl works... did you completely uninstall Beryl before instialling Compiz Fusion?  The Beryl version of Emerald DOES NOT work with Compiz Fusion (you need to specifically install emerald-git for Compiz Fusion).

Re: trying... compiz fusion

fwojciec: yes, I have installed beryl after fusion failed. It was a new arch install so there should not have been any conflicts. Now I have remoHved completely beryl to retry fusion and am using emerald-git.

Now something strange happened. I launched fusion-icon as root by mistake and got the little cube icon but no decorations. I set it to emerald and reloaded the window manager but still did not get any decorations. The problem is that now I can't launch fusion-icon as a user anymore. It says: OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/root/.config'  Even deleting all config files and even erasing all traces of compiz and then reinstalling doesn't help for this.

Also, even if I got the cube system tray icon the first time I launched it as root, now when I do it my gnome panels disappear.

I have tried deleting .compizconfigs but it does not help.

Also, I get this:

compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :1.0

The wiki says XGL is supposed to handle glx_ext.... and I have XGL running fine.

I guess it really is alpha software. I might stick with beryl for the moment and wait till a stable release comes out.

If anyone has ideas I would still really appreciate it though...

Thanks for your time

Wow what an informative response it takes its place with that other pearl of wisdom such as "Its broken".

I'm not overly enthusiastic with compiz-fusion myself, it strikes me that the old saying "What you gain on the swings you lose on the roundabouts" holds true with the project at the moment. I love the fish tank and the 'expo' is kinda cool but then comes the *slide*. My Fire and Explode animations are way too fast and I cant seem to slow them down any more than the given defaults.

The splash screen doesn't display neither does the compiz-fusion-icon-image in the system tray, just a white square with a red cross (Obviously a "Cannot find image" error) the other really annoying thing was the 20MB of Gnome related items that had to be installed for it to work none of which was needed for Beryl!

What surprises me is the problems that are arising from the re-merging of two essentially stable projects, I for one will stick with it as I'm certain these teething problems will be ironed out over the next few updates.

Compiz created a config file in the home directory of user "root" - try deleting /root/.config (as root) and then run Compiz again as user.

I don't know about the other problems, Compiz works fine on my laptop (with i810 driver) and desktop (with nvidia drivers.)  The only difference as far as configuration is concerned, in comparison to what was required to run Beryl, is that on my laptop I had to edit xorg.conf to enable AIGLX.

I hope you'll get it to work eventually.

Re: trying... compiz fusion

About Fire (Burn) and Explode animations: You use fading effects together with those animations and fading is faster than those so you see nothing. Just go in CCSM > Fading Windows and turn off "Fade On Minimize/Open/Close" option.

Thanks for that will give it a whirl, TBF I may have mucked it up by selecting 'Animation' which said, I think, that I had to disable effects? will get back to you on that one.

Fusion-icon is not official. For me it's buggy and I don't use it neither. I don't need it anyway.

Its working now after the last sync I did. smile

20MB of Gnome stuff? That's the problem in the package. Compile compiz --without-gconf and you won't have to install those 20MB.

I'm rubbish at compiling it generally goes wrong for me so I used the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Compiz_fusion method.

What problems? Compiz-Fusion is definitely much better than Beryl. Almost all stuff is ported (except dirty-ugly-bad-hacks and some useless stuff) and much more new stuff is added.

Its the *Favourite Woolly Jumper Syndrome* Beryl ran the way I liked it on my Arch install, you know how it is with something new you're always looking to pick holes in it. Having said that there are some new cool features as you say.

All those problems you're mentioning are not Compiz's fault. Users don't know how to use Compiz so they complain about "problems". Yes, I know, it isn't very user-friendly, but it's all about time. Compiz-Fusion is still a very new project.

I think the term *Problems* is possibly a bit strong maybe *Personal Niggles* is a better description?
