Laptop function keys

Anyone know how to get the brightness and volume keys to work on a laptop?  It's a Gateway NX860XL if it helps.

Re: Laptop function keys

I poked around with keytouch, but haven't really gotten serious about it.

The real kicker is that my brightness controls function properly when I'm in "dumb" environments like POST, grub, ...windows... but in linux, nadda.  I figure the kernel is doing something smart in a dumb way to get software control over the brightness controls.
