X restart on logout

I use XFCE, and whenever I log out of my session, X restarts. At first I thought this was SLIM's default behavior, so I switched to GDM. It did the same thing. After unchecking the box in gdm setup to "Restart the Xserver after every login", it still restarts X. Is this a simple problem I'm not understanding? I quite perfer SLIM, so is there an edits to daemonize it? Or is this how XFCE handles logouts?

Re: X restart on logout

slim always restarts X on logout. no option.
gdm restarts by default, and has an option not to.
kdm does not by default, and has an option to.

Re: X restart on logout

because other systems I've used don't do that, and I like it like that. So knowing its possible, and knowing it isnt working the way i want it to, bothers me.

Re: X restart on logout

If you have an ATI graphics card, disabling the X restart can be particularly bad, because it will hang your X terminal (vc/7). There are a lot of *good* reasons for X to restart after logout, and the only side effect is a 1 or 2 second delay.

Re: X restart on logout

If you don't want x to restart use GDM as it as an option or else your sol

Re: X restart on logout

two reasons:
- x restarting will force break X connection with stale x apps, thus kill them.
- if x/drivers have a mem leak, it'll wipe it out

Re: X restart on logout

If you need programs that continue working even if you log off or restart X you may find interesting this wiki article.
