wvdialconf cannot detect modem after kernel upgrade [SOLVED]

Hi!

Sometimes I'm still stuck with just dialup. I have an external serial modem and so far, it worked fine with wvdial.
But after kernel upgrade (2.6.21.6-1 -> 2.6.22.1-3) wvdial cannot detect my modem anymore.

Right now I cannot supply exact output from wvdialconf, but it said somethig like

trying /dev/ttyS0 at baud 2400 - failed
...(few gibberish characters)
trying /dev/ttyS0 at baud 9600 - failed
...(few different gibberish characters)
trying ... at baud 115200
and failed too - giving up

Well, to be honest, I'm not even sure what to look for.

I've tried to compare loaded modules for each kernel and did not find any difference. Sometimes, when I could not
detect the modem on older kernels, when nothing else, reboot always helped. Yet now, not even reboot helps. Could
anyone of you? wink

I'm running Arch on Asus laptop with Intel ICH-7 chipset:

Re: wvdialconf cannot detect modem after kernel upgrade [SOLVED]

Noone? I still cannot find out what causes the problem.. All I can confirm is that on 2.6.21 kernels modem runs well, on 2.6.22 kernels, nothing..:(

Re: wvdialconf cannot detect modem after kernel upgrade [SOLVED]

Any luck with getting your modem to work?  I just got a new system and put Don't Panic on it, I need a modem for incoming fax but wvdialconf can't find it.  Don't want to put a lot of time into this if it is a bug or something.

Re: wvdialconf cannot detect modem after kernel upgrade [SOLVED]

Nothing so far, seems like bug in 2.6.22 kernel.. The only way which worked for me was to fall back to 2.6.21 kernel..

Didn't try compile my own kernel though.

Same here sad

Today I put Arch on some powerful machine (amd dual core with 2GB), but user still does not have broadband and has to use analog modem.

I'm trying now on my computer and same - system cannot recognize modem mad

Any new info?

I tried to find 2.6.21 for x86_64 but no luck and will try to build my own kernel when I find time roll

Sincerely,
Gour

Hi!

I opened the bug (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7860), but I got the issue resolved by following wiki's wvdial article and combining "Using a dialout group" and "Using sudo" sections 'cause setup with just sudo did not work - I had to use

%dialout localhost = /usr/bin/wvdial

%dialout localhost = /usr/bin/wvdialconf

%dialout localhost = /usr/bin/gnome-ppp

way, along with changing some executables, ie.

[root@gaura-nitai gour]# ls -al /usr/bin/wvdial*
-rwsr-x--- 1 root dialout 115160 2007-08-05 22:28 /usr/bin/wvdial
-rwsr-x--- 1 root dialout 50616 2007-08-05 22:28 /usr/bin/wvdialconf
[root@gaura-nitai gour]# ls -al /usr/bin/gnome-ppp
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root dialout 62112 2007-08-01 04:09 /usr/bin/gnome-ppp

(my father-in-law is familiar using gnome-ppp) cool

Now everything works and my father-in-laws will happily using Arch until he gets broadband lol

Sincerely,
Gour

Re: wvdialconf cannot detect modem after kernel upgrade [SOLVED]

Finally got myself back on-line via dial-up :-)

Modem started to work somehow after some recent kernel upgrade, package version 2.6.22.6-1 here.  It seems like there was some bug or misconfiguration since 2.6.22.

No changes needed whatsoever (like that sudo/group chess as described by gour), gnome-ppp just works as it worked before.
