Sometime in the last few weeks, Firefox became "invisible" to KDE and E17 on my 64 bit box. It's icon has disappeared on both setups, as well as the 'Open with Firefox' option in Konqueror. E17 won't even allow me to assign it an icon anymore, but I think that may just be E17. I rebuilt Firefox from ABS hoping that it would replace the 'desktop' file to no avail. Is anyone else seeing this?

Similar problem here with XFCE on a fresh install of Don't Panic x64. Installing Firefox & Thunderbird doesn't create menu entries & trying 'firefox' from the terminal doesn't work. I had to use the full '/opt/mozilla/...' path. I assume I'll have to make my own .desktop files.

Sounds like /etc/profile.d/mozilla-common.sh isn't getting loaded.

Running that script made no difference. Symbolically linking the mozilla app's to /usr/bin/ solved the terminal issue, but I still can't get them in my menu. With my sym-links, the .desktop files are now correct & should work. I was hoping to hit 2 birds with 1 stone.

could you post the output of
[0]alcachofa hacosta # pacman -Ql firefox|grep bin && echo $PATH
Offline
[root@voodoo ~]# pacman -Ql firefox|grep bin && echo $PATH
firefox /opt/mozilla/bin/firefox
firefox /opt/mozilla/bin/firefox-config
firefox /opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-2.0.0.6/firefox-bin
firefox /opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-2.0.0.6/libgtkxtbin.so
firefox /opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-2.0.0.6/res/html/gopher-binary.gif
/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/bin:/opt/mozilla/bin
[root@voodoo ~]#
PS, Menu entry's have now appeared... All I've done since is install libvorbis, curl, alsa-lib, alsa-utils & xarchiver
I think my host name sums it up...

Cool. I just solved the problem from the original post. I simply deleted ~/.local/share/applications/firefox.desktop, and now everything is normal. I guess the local desktop file became corrupted, but the default one works properly.

I thought firefox was going in /usr now instead of /opt. Did I imagine this?

I have this same issue (on i686) and I can't solve it. I'll try with the symlink, however this should be definitely fixed...

Logging-out and logging-in after the installation "fixed" the "path bug" (now I can start Firefox typing "firefox"), HOWEVER the "menu entries" bug is still here.
