Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

We have made a testing release of Archie.  The ISO and md5sum are linked below:

archie-mini-xfce-2007.08-beta.iso
archie-mini-xfce-2007.08-beta.iso.md5sum

Please feedback on any problems or bugs here.  Thanks.

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

Things I have noticed after brief usage:

dhcpcd is at version 3.1.3, which doesn't work for some people, including me (there's a bug report lying somewhere). I'd suggest downgrading until solutions crop out. Additionally, some nice way of setting a static ip/gateway/nameserver would be in order, especially for people not familiar with Arch's way of setting up network (rc.conf+resolv.conf).

bash-completion would be nice (for pacman's completion), or perhaps even using zsh (with zsh-completion) as a default shell.

Perhaps putting some sensors in the panel would be a good idea.

All in all, I'm thrilled by the looks and overall possibilities Archie offers. Thumbs up.

That only proves how impatiently we awaited any news of Archie, tomk ;-)

Thanks, we'll look into that.

At one point we were considering a netwoking wizard that simply populates some network-profiles and runs them.  That is still a project on my personal todo list smile

Noted - they'll go on the someday/oneday/maybe list, although sensors are a problem as there some many different sorts anything is bound to be redundant for someone.

Thanks for the feedback.  Frankly I'm just glad the thing booted ;-)

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

ok, i have a free weekend... i'll try making some simple pygtk network wizard.

also, we'd appreciate if someone can please test the installer - i've tested it but i would welcome more testers to find some hidden bugs out there...

regarding bash-completion - ill put it in the iso pkglist, although im not a big fan of it (it used to confuse me sometimes...), and although i love zsh, i think most users still prefer bash so we'll stick to it on our showcase isos.

play along smile

ps.
about dhcpcd - its gonna be problematic to downgrade using the automatic iso creation - if someone can find a patch or a workaround for dhcpcd we'll appreciate that.

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

Just looked into it, dhcpcd 3.1.3-2 (from yesterday) seems to solve the issue, therefore only update is needed to get it working properly.

I didn't have any sophisticated sensors (a bit misworded myself, perhaps) in mind, just CPU/MEM/network(wireless?) meters, like in previous Archie.

Users of (untweaked) bash should be at home with default config of zsh - from a normal user perspective, it just offers additional features (tell me if you think otherwise). Be it bash or zsh, prompt could use some tweaking, like adding colors different for user and root, date(?), RPROMPT (with zsh). My opinion, I can't quite live with bash anymore, especially with dull and uninformative prompt ;-p

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

Booted into Archie again.

Home/root nesting doesn't work (should it?). Both stop at "initializing the kernel". If I suspect its use correctly, it would be a killer feature. Any technical explanation of that?

Sorry, z4ziggy, I can't really test the Installer, don't have any place to spare. I just launched it and at first was struck by its resemblance to Windows installers, which wasn't the most pleasant feeling ;-) Other than that, it looks and seems nice, at least as far as I went.

Things to consider: setting a meaningful homepage in firefox (archlinux.org, archie's page?), setting up privoxy to filter ads, adding reiser4 support (kind of troublesome, but a must if Archie was to work as a rescue CD too), adding irssi/weechat (well, that's a big pro of Archie, you can easily add software when it's running; speaking of which, adding some easily accessible documentation/howto about pacman/Arch for people not familiar with it is worth considering).

With Archie I can hope that I won't have to keep 3 LiveCD distributions lying around, all for different purposes.

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

yea, the installer theme is from some windows-installer project (sorry, cant remember which...) - i've tried to mimic that as much as i could simply because i liked the way it felt - no regards to being a windows installer. i simply believe if something works nice, why not use it...

about the gui network configurator - i actually finished it (a mix of pygtk and bash, quick and dirty...) but the program will work only with the simplest configuration - 1 network card, mainly due to the "gateway" parameter in rc.conf. so, ive decided to extended the program... now it supports in multiple network cards, and i will try my best to keep rc.conf settings intact (ie, try to avoid altering stuff which might cause damage for rc.conf with multiple network entries). i hope to be able to present a working beta in the next few days (oh, my configurator resembles Ubuntu's network config... is that good or bad? tongue )

Well, why not take a look at network-profiles...seeing as they allow you to set a GATEWAY for each device...

Network config in rc.conf is old school - it scares me how many people don't realise this!

You mean xfce doesn't autostart on the system you installed using the installer?

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

1st see at which stage does it hang - edit the grub command line and delete all the "splash=xxx" parameter.

also, try to disable acpi in virtualbox - this usually helped me.

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

Installer works under virtualbox fine... here you have to edit menu.lst [but you should check it anyway!] startx gets you into xfce4 then I get a hard lock if I try to launch anything ....

under console I was able to run pacman to upgrade without a problem

not sure whats causing the lock, kernel gtk [although its been upgraded!] cannot give you anything more atm logs did not throw any light on it

To launch live cd under virtualbox set path on cd drive to iso file [quick way without having to burn iso!] you can run with of without virtual hard drive [vdi!]

HTH

dtw,

Actually the problem is that it is stuck with this screen
"SMP motherboard not detected" and nothing more.
I tried without ACPI, with ACPI and all entries on grub menu... I never saw Archie 2007.08 beta (yet)

however, my config is able to boot :
Geexbox, Wolvix (stable releases)

but not Slax (rc6) and Archie (2007.08 beta)

Did I point out what "beta release" mean? big_smile
