3. regarding the small fonts issue - im guessing you have non-standard gfx settings or monitor... since on most machines ive tested it worked fine. is there any "tweak" we can arrange to make everyone happy (you included)?

I've tested it on two computers and I had the same problem, but on VirtualBox, it works well.
I can't figure the reason

5. we are including latest vlc from [testing] so i don't know what can be the problem. maybe a missing package or something?

On my Arch installation, I have the [current] version and it works well. Only me experiences this issue?

How can I rebuild the initram and leave beside the scanning IDE section?

if you skip the ide scanning part, then archie won't boot since it wont find the archie.sqf file... however, you might be able to debug it a little further. todo so, remove all the splash-related parameters from the grub boot command line, and add "initrdcli debug DEBUG=yes BOOTDEV=bla" (the 'bla' is just to make the init scripts ignore searching for a boot-device). i hope this will work.

(just for the record, not all of those parameters are used in latest archie scripts, i simply don't remember which version dtw used to build the iso)

Is the archie-repo going to be updated soon?
Is it possible to use the archie.db.tar.gz.old or to make a working new db out of the current packages?
(I think there were some dependency problems last time i tried it)

Archie is an excellent live-cd. It comes off as being for the end-user yet ssh/vnc/geany made it in the .iso The fonts need improving. The installer... for my username I used a capitol letter. Upon rebooting I was not able login as $user, and when I wanted to edit some files that the installer led me to believe I could nothing happened.

I'm an end user so after my hd-install I wanted jacman..

Other than what I have mentioned, this is one of the easiest live-cd's to use. No boot errors, I am fiddling to get my sound working but I am looking at the wiki now and prolly have that fixed in a moment.

I hate to ask what may be an obvious/stupid question, but I'm not seeing on Archie's site.

Can I use this LiveCD to install Arch with Reiser4? If not, is there an Arch LiveCD that will allow me to do a Reiser4 install?

In principle you can install Arch Linux with pretty well any live CD (using the ~"install from livecd using ftp" method, somewhere on the wiki), but if you want reiser4 you've probably got quite a bit of work (custom kernel and compilation of support utilities) because it's not directly supported in Arch. I know how to patch and install a custom kernel. It really isn't that difficult. However, I don't believe you can resize reiser4 partitions, so I can't really install on one FS, copy everything to a new drive, delete the original partition, and the resize the new partition (how most people suggest you migrate to a new FS).

I wasn't aware that you could install Arch from ANY livecd. I have some Gentoo livecd's that support Reiser4.

Also, I'm fully aware that ReiserFS once had a pretty nasty bug that made people lose data, and so the "unstable" tag permanently follows both versions of Reiser. In my personal usage, I live in a very old house with bad wiring, and I frequently get power surges and the like. I also have a 2 year old who loves pushing buttons. My computer gets turned off unexpectedly more often than I'd like. I've tried ext3 twice, and ext4 twice, and both times my root partition has been trashed just by powering off the computer. The last time, e2fsck was "repairing" the hard drive, and then suddenly my entire /etc directory was moved to lost and found. However, I have never lost any data with Reiser4, and I have used it for years with Gentoo. I find the atomic writes pretty useful.

And performance wise, it isn't even close.

I appreciate you trying to point me to a discussion on the merits/lack-there-of of ext4 and reiser4, but I'm just looking for the best way to install arch on top of Reiser4.

How about:

- (minimal) Arch install to some partition
- build needed packages (kernel, reiser4 utilities)
- format reiser4 '/' partition
- copy installation to reiser4 partition
- set up reiser4 partition so that it boots
- do something else (e.g. /home partition) with initial install partition

That way you wouldn't need to resize anything.

just a pointer... for the network profiles GUI, you might want to update it to netcfg2 now/soon, as it will be replacing netcfg shortly.

I downloaded "archie-mini-xfce-2007.08-beta" en placed it on usb, and made it bootable.
when i boot i get "No Linux found" ,or something like that. Does somebody has an idea ?
