Not detecting usb devices etc...

I just did a fresh install of Arch. hal and dbus are both running but its not detecting my cd's and usb flash drives and such. Ive been away from arch for a while so Im probably missing something simple. Anyone know what the issue would be?

Are you member of the groups: storage and optical?
Have you started the hal deamon in /etc/rc.conf
