Data Loss

I have lost over 15 gigs of data from my Desktop. The folders are still there but all data contained in folders is gone.
This is on my primary drive w/ my home mounted on the 4th partition being ext3. I've ran disk check and spinrite. Nothing. The files are not of major importance but I would still like to know how something like this could happen and why it's only files that were onm my desktop, yet the folders are still there. Any ideas? Also anyway to maybe recover?

ETA: the only file that is still there is one that was owned by root.

Re: Data Loss

I just saw the same thing happen in XFCE...lost contact with the files from the point of view of the GUI, and even Thunar (XFCE file manager) stopped running.

I restarted in Gnome and it was all there.

You didn't mention which desktop did this...was it XFCE?

Re: Data Loss

KDEmod

I've too had this happen before and df would still report the correct usage yet the files were gone. That was fixed after a reboot.

This time df reported 7% used, when it was 55 % used before the files disappeared.
